Painting Grill

I got a job building grills for a city park. I am using Rustolium high temp paint. Can you use regular primer with this paint? If not do you just use the color you are going to paint and put several coats on it. I am using carbon steel, and it sucks in the paint. Reply:Most types of Rustoleum paints I have used only require you to get rid of coarse rust first with no primer required.  Read the label and check with their website!
Reply:Your paint is only as good as your primer. If the primer is not rated for high heat, then put several coats of the high temp paint on.UA Local 598
Reply:I have been doing a lot of reading because I have started building a couple BBQ's and everything I have read people just put the high temp paint on the metal after cleaning it, no primer required.  Like WHughes said, the pain is only as good as the primer, so if you prime it and it cant take the heat the high temp paint will crack/fall off along with the primer.
Reply:self etching primer on the cooker according to a friend of mine. on bare metal that is. or an epoxy primer. as far as a burn box, there isnt anything that he knows of that will stand up to the temperature. hopefully this might be of some help.
Reply:Like the saying says, "Clean-liness is next to God-liness."  The cleaner it is the better it will stick.  I wire brush, sand, wipe with acetone, apply a few heavy coats of High temp engine paint from a rattle can.  It works great for my BBQ's.The BBQ on my truck, has to be repainted every couple of years.-Rhyno07 Fowler 200D65 RedFace04 Miller TB 302, 22hpMiller 12RCMiller HF 251-1Lincoln SP135HyperTherm PM 380and a few others... Reply:like RHYNO says ,  "clean-liness"- i'll wipe my steel with acetone or thinner until a white rag stays clean- also would help to etch with a wire brush or lightly sand for a little more anchor tooth-RustOleum High Temp. paint is a "D.T.M" ( Direct To Metal ) Paint....meaning it should have a little etching catalyst in it        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:I paint a lot of machines/projects with rustoleum or the local hardware store equivilent. Probabaly went through 20 gallons in the last year. Get rid of the loose  flakey paint and rust and heavy grease and it will stick with no primer.The stuff sticks to things that car paint wouldn't dream of sticking to. How ever your prep work or lack of it will effect how the finished job look like. I like the rustoleum better but if I need to have a custom color mixed the hardware store can get do it and still get good results.Last edited by tresi; 03-28-2010 at 04:09 PM.Tough as nails and damn near as smart

Reply:hey thanks for all the info. I was thinking along those lines also. It is all new metal so there is no rust.
