Just curious what others are paying. I am looking at buying some 2x2x1/4" steel tubing, and there are two places within about 50 miles of me that sell steel (other than mom and pop shops). The first charges 4.22 per foot, but $1 per cut (I need 3 cuts in order to get it small enough to put it in my car and take it home)The other place is 3.25 per foot, but charge $4 per cut (rip off in my opinion for the cuts). What do you pay (currently) for 2x2x1/4 square tubing per foot? The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:That tubing weighs 5.4 lbs / foot and I pay between $.40 and $.50 per pound at the local metal yard for surplus material so between $2.20 and $2.70 per foot. May have to clean a little surface rust for that price. $1 per cut.Cut an MGB and widened 11" C4 Corvette suspension and LT1 Chevrolet power & 6 spd. Reply:I paid appx. $40 per 20ft stick of 2"x2"x1/8" here in Asheville NC area. That is of course half the weight of your example. They didn't charge anything for cutting it in half. I checked a couple of other places here, and they were the same.Nctox, Stickmate LX 235AC/160DC HH210
Reply:Buy a portaband and take it to the yard with you. Probably wouldn't charge anything for the use of an electrical outlet for 5 min.None of my suppliers charge anything for the first cut.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I agree with SundownIII. Take your own saw.If you don't have a portaband, take an old circular saw with an abrasive blade and ask where their outlet is. Suppliers I purchase from will cut full sticks (20-24 foot pieces) in half for free so I can get them in my truck. I also paid $40.00 per 24 foot stick of 2x2 x 11 guage ($.557 cents per lb.).
Reply:I dunno bout 2x2 but i just got 3"x3"x.35 and it was $8.70 a foot or ~$0.95 a lb for new and $0.50 a lb for the surplus stuff. For 30' of it I think i paid $260.
Reply:I have a sawz-all. I have used that in the past to rip through 2x2x1/4 tubing (actually, it was a general work blade, and cut right through it. I was impressed)I may give the cheaper place a call and see if they will allow it (I have never been there before, so I don't know the layout)The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com -- |
