I frequently make 16" diameter holes that are 48 inches deep for a living and I want to make a truck mounted auger that is hydraulic powered. My ruff brainstorm would involve a auger attachment for a skidsteer. Is there such thing as a 12 volt pump that could run this? At max they seem to need 2500 psi at 25 gpm. As far as mounting it it would be a design similar to a 3 point hitch on the rear of the truck. Future plans for the truck include a dumping flatbed so does anyone have any idea if the pumps that are including in the dumping kits could run a skidsteer auger or is that asking to much. The dump kits they sell out of northern dont have pump specs. Id love everyones input Im still playing with the mounting design so Ill have some pics when I get further with that for now I just need hydraulic advice.
Reply:Ok..... I'm sure a company like Fenerstone will make a pump to suit your needs... I know they build them 12 V, 2500 PSI, I'm not sure of the GPMs. Before you look into that have you considered a P.T.O.? Running an auger on an electric pump unit will put a strain on the alternator and batteries of the truck. The PTO is a stronger design by far. What type of truck you are mounting this unit on? You'll spend a bit more on the PTO and Pump, hoses a hyd tank, filter head and spool valve but you could incorporate all of this in the dump body as well. Another thing to think about is the oil and tank.... on a electric /hyd pump the oil capacity is very small you may not have enough capacity to support everything. Not only that the oil will not really have a chance to cool in such a small tank as compared to a 15 gallon hyd tank for the PTO.Last edited by lorenzo; 02-17-2007 at 01:54 AM._________________Chris
Reply:05 silverado duramax with an allison....after 04 they stopped putting the pto on them unless you got the chassis cab model. To add one is a big pain and real expenive. I wish pto was easier because it would be great just to put a 3 point hitch on the back of it and buy a tractor auger. What about other power sources? Arnt there small gas motors you can buy with attached pump to run hydro tools
Reply:well you could look into a clutch pump system.... I can get some info on that. Or as you mentioned you could look into a pony motor of some sort.... The clutch pump is not going to be cheap, I can promise you that._________________Chris

Reply:the 12v systems won't run an auger, they will very slowly raise a dump body and strain and groan the whole time. if the pto is not an option, then look into like a 18 hp kohler or briggs and straton. these will run one. pump, motor, resevoir and hoses should run between 3-4 grand."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it

Reply:Maybe you should look at these..http://www.northerntool.com/images/p.../191180_lg.gifTruck towable and self sufficant.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Yep, that's what I was going to suggest. Towable auger from Northern.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:And for the $$$$Seems like a no-brainer..Unless your committed into turning your truck into a drilling rig.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:That is a lot of oil pressure and volume, it would require about 35 input horsepower to produce 25 gallons at 2500psi, you probably don‘t need that much hydraulic power for your drilling.
Reply:Originally Posted by ztecI was considering one of those but Im always skeptical of brands Ive never heard of from northern tool. I was also considering this one http://postholeauger.com/sk500backsaver.html only thing is both of those only go up to 16 inchs I would like to have a setup that can go a little bigger if I ever need to. Is there any reason I couldent stick an 18 or 20 inch bit on there? Are those bits specific to the machine?

Reply:Drilling holes 16" by 48" on a consistant basis is no small task unless the soil in VA is more forgiving than it is in other states I've been in. The auger trucks you see today are a refinement of years of trials and errors. Granted, they are pure muscle and iron, but they work. There is a lot more to holes that size than just rotory torque also. There's a lot of shakin and rattlin and rockin of whatever iron works is holding that rotory power source in place. As an individual or small business you don't need to drill as fast and effeciently as a PoCo, and you can tolerate a higher break down rate than a PoCo but there is a break-over point there somewhere between $'s investment vs production/holes completed. Personally I think a build your own just might be pretty darn involved and spendy.
Reply:ya I cant have a heavy truck since Im always on customers driveways, Ill prolly just buy one like the one from northern
Reply:If you're going to be making a dumping flatbed, would there be room enough for one of those walk behind rubber-tracked machines with auger attachment?  You could get into tighter spaces with one of those than with a skid steer backhoe attachment mounted on the rear frame of your truck.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:ya the mini skidsteers are what your talking about, Id like to have one but they are a little more than I want to spend.
