I just saw some disturbing newscast videos on "lock bumping" and have started to think about beefing up my locks, etc. Looking for ideas for beefing up my home/shop security -- large loud dog and guns are already covered.  Looking for latches, bars, etc. ideas -- things you can make in your shop. Thanks.Lock bump videos:Biased to Medeco locks/keys ($$$) but still interesting -- Schlege Primus is an excellent and less expensive alternative and there's others. Having your locks rekeyed to a less bump-able configuration is a cheaper solution. Ask a locksmith:http://www.medeco.com/about/whats_new/inthenews.htmlLast edited by Visorblue; 02-13-2007 at 11:52 AM.Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Reply:That is so simple it's amazing. I think I have a few Schlege locks, now I gotta go around and check all my locks ...and make sure my 2 pistols are fully loaded. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Thats very interesting. Astounding how simple they could open those locks!I take my shop/home security very seriously myself. I have brand now high security Schlade locks and dead bolts on all doors. Plus the I bought a American Bulldog that is sure to protect when the time comes. He is by far my greatest asset when it comes to security. He will always put himself before me or my family, and that has been proven before. I keep him housed between the shop and my house so he can quickly reach either door.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor
Reply:I like the old idea of catch them red handed... Got vid cameras and digital recorders all over my place ( does the movie 'sliver' ring a bell ).  Well maybe not that bad, but the entry points and the yard is covered.Still pretty scary to think how easy it is to open a lock.  Something else for me to work on.
Reply:I stopped off at a locksmith and they (3 of them) said that by far the weakest link is the door and door jamb. The average thief is going to kick the door in or break a window to gain entry. Dual locks, deadbolt and locking door knobs (that are locked), with at least 3” screws (not the short ones that usually come with the locks), lessens that problem as the force from kicking is distributed over a larger area. Reinforcing the door jamb will help. They looked at my Kwikset key and said that the way it’s cut (hi-highs and low-lows vs. mid-level notches) would make it pretty much impossible to bump my locks. Had it been cut differently they would have suggested that they make a hard to bump key, similar to mine, and then rekey my locks to match the new key. Add that there's two locks on the security screen and two on the front door and it wouldn't be worth trying to bump.If I still wanted to get new locks they like the Schlage locks with the double set of notches (Primus and another model that I’ve forgotten) that makes them bump proof and pick-proof, and they’re less expensive that than the Medeco ($80 vs. $150+), which they also sell. Said there's a way to buy a less expensive Schlage lock and then add the good lock cylinder to it.http://everestprimus.schlage.com/Also, from a security consultant that wrote some articles on lock bumping: “While I am not in the business of endorsing products, you might logically ask what I have on my home, office and evidence storage area? Medeco and Schlage Primus for my residence, and the Evva MCS and Primus for secure evidence storage.”However, since we have welders and work in steel, there has to be some extras we can make to add to our home/shop security. Bars on the windows is an option but I'm looking for other options. No, large swinging blades is not what I had in mind. Reply:I live in a small rural town, but having been born and raised in Gary Indiana, I reinforced the hinges and jams on all the doors in my first house before I moved the first stick of furniture in. The doors all have secure locks on them also. (Can't be bumped, very hard to pick)My neighbors all thought I was crazy. Most of them didn't even lock their doors back then. (Like I said, very rural)For everything else, like the garage, barn, shop, and sheds, I use simple bars and padlocks. On a side note: I haven't lived in Gary for some time now but a couple years ago I worked with a guy who still lived there. In a pretty bad part of Gary no less.I asked him: "Don't you have problems with burglaries and theft up there?"He said: "Naw.....Not really.....After I shot and killed the third one breakin' into my garage, they started leaving me alone"That's the philosophy I'd like to see the whole country adopt. And for those who doubt the validity of that story.....Trust me.....If you grew up where I did.....You'd have no problem believing it!Patrick

Reply:well being on dial up i dont get to see the video. read this hole page and the video only loaded 8 sec. so it would take about 5 or 6 hrs to load it.the door jam is the part i would beef up first, its generaly only 3/4" pine with some trim on it. if i was in an area where i was concerned i would instal steel door jams, and plate the lock area of a solid wood door or better yet get a steel door, they come with wood finishes now and you cant even tell the diference. although my door is just white painted steel.for now i have 3 bullmastifs all over 130lbs with the 2 males over 150, and a 12 gage with OObuck. nasty stuff. way more than is needed for where i live.and yes my gun is locked so it wont be used against me should i come home to an intruder my dogs have not finished eating. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:some motion detector systems can alow for small pets like cat sized but i dont know of any that alow for larger dogs like my bullmastif or even a sheperd. so you may need to restrict his access to the area you intend to sensor. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:Originally Posted by VisorblueWell, yes, I agree BUT using deadly force to protect possessions is illegal (here, at least) and subjects you to all sorts of legal hassles. Shoot the no-good crook and he/she will sue you. Remove him/her from the gene pool and their heirs will sue you. Even if you amazingly won the case the costs to you would far exceed whatever the crook could have stole. So, scaring them away seems more viable -- shotgun and rock salt is okay though. Note, shouting "DROP THE WEAPON" loud enough so your neighbors can hear and then shooting comes in on the list somewhere. Little of what I have is worth someone's life, regardless of how scummy they are. Now, shooting and purposely missing so they crap their pants and run funny might be fun.

Reply:We're kind of veering off-topic a bit. My point is more on what we can do, as welders, to make it a lot harder for people to get into our homes/shops so we don't have to make more drastic decisions. Maybe making a metal piece for the door jamb (installed with long screws) so kicking in the doors is a very difficult. I put in a French style door with 10 panes of glass on my home shop (converted patio) door as I want the light. Thinking of either attaching some security mesh (stuff that they use on security doors, seen it in sheets at Home Depot) to the outside which would also protect the glass, too. Maybe adding a bar or a couple barrel bolts that would make it difficult (and noisy) to kick in.Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Reply:Browsing through a Harbor Freight flier I ran into this driveway alert system which would give a remote motion sensor in the shop with an alarm elsewhere -- up to 400' away. There's two models of this, 90054 and 93068 (shown below):http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=93068While not a remote sending unit this one looks interesting, too, and I like that it doesn't require batteries (except in the remote switch), plus you can deactivate it when you want to enter the shop without having to have the alarm go off each time:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=42768Prices seem cheap, too.Last edited by Visorblue; 02-25-2007 at 10:08 AM.Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Reply:Well the g/f and I decided to step up the security a little. We went and met with the breeder of our dog. He is going to give me first pic out of the next litter of pups from his biggest dog. The dogs name is Bull and he is larger than my dogs dad. Thing has a neck like a tree trunk. We will be getting a female to pair with my current dog.So now I will have two of these guarding my shop!
