welding 3-g & 4-g flux-core 1/2 plate 45incl angle

when welding the above with a 1/4" root opening with a back-up bar would it be best to run a pass on each side of the bevel then up the center? thanks
Reply:For your root pass or hot pass?  I run singles as long as I can on the 3G, but I like to run 2 passes on the 4G. (For the root pass)Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Hello aluminum, most of the folks that I know, including myself, would run a bead up the middle first and then start working from one side to the other or work each side and then up the middle. Wire diameter might have an influence on this choice and certainly personal preference and what works for you comes into play here. I usually work the root pass a bit to be sure that I tie in both sides, this is for both vertical and overhead. From that point on, the particular progression depends upon whether heat is an issue from a metallurgical perspective. If allowable, weaving might be an option, if not, stringer placement in such a way as to avoid ending up with any deep crevices along the sides of any fill passes is key. That's my quick and dirty answer, others may have different suggestions and reasoning. So long as a particular method works for you and properly deals with any applicable codes if they apply, you should be good to go. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I wouldn't.  You're just asking for trapped slag/LOP when trying to split bead a gap that small.
