I have a commercial freezer that I picked up and stripped the guts out of it. I am planning on making a smoker out of it.I think the walls are stainless (very thin) ad I want to weld either square stock or angle steel to the sides with insulation next to it, then plate on top of that. Will this work and if so, how do I go about doing it. The weld would be inside the chamber and wouldnt be exposed to elements. Thanks
Reply:Should be no problem with mig or tig. could use stainless filer or not shouldn't make a huge difference.Though the inside of a smoker is pretty humid and a little corrosive, regular steel will rust.Welding to thin sheet can be a challenge esp if trying to attach thicker parts to thinner. Could a beter option be to pop rivet or bolt the angle bracing inplace?Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:you can weld it with 309 wire but as in the last post mild steel will rust unless you use it alot and keep a good coat of grease on the exposed metal, this will extend the life but it will still rust over time, let me know when the boston buts are ready!member of plumbers and pipefitters local 630 lincoln 130 inverter1965 red face sa 200
Reply:Thanks for the replies fellas. I smoke probably every other weekend. I have a couple offset smokers as it is, and the inside rusting isnt an issue since everything stays coated with a nice layer of smoker and oil.I am trying to avoid having a bunch of holes or rivets sticking out on the outside. It should have 8 slide out racks on each side that are 22.5" wide and 28" deep. The thin sheetmetal may be an issue.Any recommendations for welding the thin stuff.I have a MM350
Reply:You can stick it with some 309 3/32" arc rod too. That stuff is neat.        Sincerely,             William McCormick

Reply:Love the MM350.Turn it down to 17V.If it's super thin, run .023" wire.Focus your arc on the thicker stock and just wash the bead onto the sheet metal.Keep your beads short and move from place to place to reduce distortion.CWI, CWE, CST for Miller, Lincoln, Thermadyne, Hypertherm & ESABMillermatic 350PLincoln Invertec 205 AC/DCVictor combo torchESAB PCM 1125
