I know I have a bunch of left hand helding gloves that are all burnt up just because of how I position my hands while I am welding. I was wondering does anyone have a way of reconditioning the leather to soften it back up. I am just trying to find away to save money, cause droping 15 bucks on gloves if I could just recondition them would be great.
Reply:You might try saddle soap. that is used to soften and condition leather. neets foot oil works as well.
Reply:I end up with masking tape on my left index and thumb Wish you could just buy single gloves! Maybe we could start an exchange between lefties and righty's on here. I'll also cut the finger of an old glove and slip in over the worn-out index.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Grab them by the back end and bang the front fingers on the corner of a welding tabel a few times might help. This is what I do to soften up new ones.
Reply:You CAN buy left only gloves from Tillman...just for your case.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I just go down to Airgas and ask for a package of 10 left hand only gloves and match them up with 10 righty's that are still good.  10 lefts cost the same as 5 lefts and 5 rights.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:There are a lot of great ideas, here.  Personally, I hang on to them until I find an opposite handed welder so that we can trade.  Even though my pile of gloves gets in my way, once the exchange happens, I think that I feel better.-Rhyno07 Fowler 200D65 RedFace04 Miller TB 302, 22hpMiller 12RCMiller HF 251-1Lincoln SP135HyperTherm PM 380and a few others... Reply:Become ambidextrous. On all carpentry, mechanics and gardening skils I am ambidextrous. On welding, even using my monodextrous right hand, I am not that great a welder.
Reply:Had a general laborer in the shop once that was saving all the unburnt right hand gloves every one was throwing out. Said he was planning on making a patch work leather jacket.  Don't know how that turned out. He was laid off befor he had enough gloves.
Reply:Get a left handed welder friendTough as nails and damn near as smart

Reply:I use WD-40 and heat it later with electrical heater blower... soften mine... I found his to recondition my red wing...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:I beat on them with a large hammer with smooth face and edges.  This seems to relax the shrunk parts.  I use a 4 lbs sledge.  It doesn't take much hammer force.  It's more like just free dropping the hammer from 6" up or so.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Throw 'em in the laundry with your other work clothes and some fabric softener...let dry laying somewhere, not in the dryer...seems to work ok the few times I did it...

Reply:15 bucks seems like a lot to pay for gloves.  I've seen them at Galeton for anywhere from 4 to 8 bucks a pair.  They look pretty good.
Reply:when I was at Airgas getting my tanks refilled, I noticed this heat shield that you can slip over the outside of the glove. I purchased one and gave it a try, it has helped quite a bit, now I don't go through right hand gloves any longer.
