I thought I would post this picture of a broken barge spud. It is about three feet square on the end and full length about sixty feet long. There was a cross brace next to the fracture however it has long ago rusted away. Of course we are going to repair this. Who said you couldn't weld iron oxide ??? Sometimes one has to compromise. The world is not perfect. Attached Images

Reply:It was 3/8 plate formed in a channel then welded into a tube. Angles were then welded on the corners. To splice back together the ends are cut back square and and quarter inch thick backing bar tacked inside the butt joint. The angles are cut back and replaced so that the replacement angles overlap the joint.
Reply:Pretty cool Randy. Post a pic of the completed job. The dime would have been nice as john suggested for comparrison as in the picture it dosn't look that big.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Glad to see I'm not the only one who has to deal with the junk that goes to sea. I just did some mods to a few spuds._________________Chris
Reply:Here is some of the repairs. Since all the cross bracing was gone inside and no one wanted to crawl in we cut openings and bracing was inserted then the openings were welded up again. I didn't have the personal experience of this repair. It was a mighty dirty job. The gas shielded flux core was ideal for fusing into the rusty walls. Sorry the one pic is quite dark. I am not used to this new camera. I am finding my old Mavica is tough to beat. Attached Images |
