I wasn't able to find much info on this so I went ahead and experimented. This photo was my first attempt at welding cast iron with stainless. Give me your input on what you think and please give me any suggestions on what I could do to improve. I used my Precision Tig 175 around 125 amps DC red tungsten 1/16 308L filler. Yes that is a pin hole you see in the weld. Attached Images
Reply:Tigging cast iron idealy is done with 309 stainless..But I have done it with 308..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...teel+Cast+iron...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Looks pretty good. Did you break it apart to see if it will hold? I've farted around with all kinds of cast iron repairs and have one on the go now. The cast iron electrodes on a dc machine get the best all round results. Preheat is a necessity. Search past forums under cast iron repairs. Good tips on a recent post regarding flame treating the base material prior to welding.Man invented metal, he can do whatever he wants with it.KMAC
Reply:Good Job.Don't worry about the pin hole,if you want to eliminate the pin hole, just run off too the side of your bracket.Don't stop in the middle of your bead on the end of ya weld, you'll get ride of the Fish Eye we call it.
Reply:Looks good, what is the part you're welding?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:This part is one stage of a five stage irrigation pump. I tried to break the weld by driving a chisel in the water passage. The weld held but in all honesty I didn't try really hard to break it. I welded another stage on this pump a few years ago with Ni rod. It turned out well too but I wanted to try tig this time.
Reply:I knew a welder who would knock the flux off of nickel rod and then clean prior to use for TIG welding cast. Clamed it worked well.
Reply:Nickel 99 Is the filler for cast with tig.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
