im just starting out after schooling and all you hear about are shutdowns is there good money in these as a welder or what
Reply:One welder online is selling a book on how to become T6(?) approved and work for the pipe lines. That may just mean be willing to go where 80% of welders are not willing to go.
Reply:There is a thread on this forum about that 6g welder thing. The thread is called 'whats ya'lls take on this'.Go to UA.org to learn about the pipe trades. Shutdown work is mostly union and a good gig. You can make 100k in 6 months or more on some jobs.UA Local 598
Reply:Great money. I've only worked one before and not as a welder, just as a handyman/gopher- but I know how much money I made and more importantly, how much MORE money the unionized plant welders and the Boilermakers made during it! Getting yourself in with the Boilermakers union early would probably be good advice.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:Boilermakers are okay, try UA pipefitters first. No offense to you boilermakers on the forum. In this area, we make the most and have the most talented welders. UA.orgUA Local 598
Reply:HAHA Nice hughes...haha. But honestly good money can be made working shut downs/outages in the union sector. I just finished up at the refueling outage at Millstone and made about 7600 in 6 weeks and I never got a "full" week because they were cutting hours as soon as the outage started. If you want to work plants I would say the Pipefitters, Boilermakers Ironworkers and Millwrights are the top of the heap. The fitters tend to always have people at shutdowns. The Boilermakers and Ironworkers are hit or miss. To my knowledge the Millwrights do not do anywhere near as much welding as the other three trades listed.Call your local union halls and get the skinny bro. Nothing to be lost by trying and only everything to be gained.'MikeIW15 |
