First of all I am new to the forum so hello to all. Second, I am in the market for a lincoln sa 200 (one of the older machines like 70s-80s) and I have some questions I couldn't find during my search of past threads and I would really like some help.1. When selecting a lincoln sa 200 what are some things to look for to ensure one doesn't buy a bad machine? Besides the obvious like oil leaks, smoke from burning oil, difficult start up, doesn't idle down. I am just trying to avoid costly repairs for a while. 2. Are there any years to avoid or look for? If so what is the reasoning?3.What do I need to look for as far as armature? (tell tale signs of malfunctions)4. Are the diesel machines more complex to a measureable degree? I ask because my truck is diesel and the commonality of fuel would be nice. 5. Between diesel and gas which one has the more durability and is easier to take care of.6. How important are hours of use when considering a machine? The more in-depth and specific your answers are the better. Thanks ahead of time fellas.
Reply:5. If available, go with the diesel. It will last longer and handles abuse better. Also, given you already have a diesel truck it makes sense.CWI, CWE, CST for Miller, Lincoln, Thermadyne, Hypertherm & ESABMillermatic 350PLincoln Invertec 205 AC/DCVictor combo torchESAB PCM 1125
Reply:code # 7789, has the highest shunt coil failure, can burn in any of them, but...you asked.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=user+locationA '69 with 500 hrs for $2500. or a '79 with 2500 hrs for $1500.?? No brainer.Diesel truck=diesel welder. Diesel cost more than gasoline, but you'll get many more hrs from a tank than gasoline. A machine with excess vibration=bearing failure. Look at hoses, belts. leaks. alternator etc. LISTEN to the machine at low idle and high idle.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Thanks guys this really helps. Anyone else have advice on the matter?
Reply:Yes, if YOU don't know the difference between various machines, doubtful any postings here will do you any good.
Reply:haha...Well there are douche bags on every forum
Reply:Dude...Your in Dallas, there are SA 200's all over. Some for very good deals.I'm new to Sa's but,It's generally considered the older the better regarding these machines. I have an 81' and it does great other than an oil leak. From what I've seen most of them unless completely run through leak a little. I have an '81 and my instructor has an '87. Both seem to weld the same. Many parts can be replaced at the autoparts store. Most / Many machines have no hour meter, and it can be unplugged or replaced with ease. So I wouldn't put much credence into the hours. Obviously lower is better. In terms of startup / Mine does not need the choke 1 bit. My instructors needs it on all the way. And they both have a slight puff of smoke when being put onto load or switching from idle to full.Best way to buy is by trying it out. I let the one I just bought run an hour or so while I talked to the owner and welded. I try to read people. Ask plenty of questions. Ask them to walk you through the machine, and point out anything they would change. Many rebuilt and great looking machines in you area can be had for 3k.I bought this one for $1200..$50 in paint and 5 hours time have it looking like this. Also, don't know how much you plan on welding or dumping into a machine but, You could buy one a little rough for around a k like mine and spend 3k to dial it, and still be under the cost of a newer machine. These machine no retail for around 18k.Last edited by jsm11; 05-20-2010 at 02:36 PM.
Reply:Another great post thank you. Yes my welder (when I was a helper) had an old one as well not sure on the year. It needed full choke to start too. The hour meter thing I did not know so thank you for that. Naturally welding with the machine will be a must before buying. Thanks again for your input.
