I want to build a press with four angle iron sides with a gap between the side legs rather than two channel iron legs.I think it would be handy to come in from the sides with longer work.I have never seen one like that,am I missing something?tractor, loader.dozer, backhoe, and all the tools to keep em movin
Reply:Some have straight bar sides so I would imagine angle would work, see link below.http://www.enerpac.com/en-US/product...-frame-pressesMatt
Reply:I like how the cylinder can roll side to side. That is definatly giong into my build.I "aquirred" an high voltage electic tower, four or five tons of 4x4x1/2 angle. It's heavy galvanized so I have a lot of grinding to do.I think it will make a great press.I wonder if I can adapt a hoist trolley for moving the jack sideways.Yes I saw the thread about the guys stealing copper wire.No I didnt aquire mine that way.tractor,loader.dozer,backhoe,and all the tools to keep em movin

Reply:I had sketched up a design with 4x4x1/2 corner pieces like you describe, but I settled on channel.  Can't remember the reason right now.  It was prolly cost, allignment, or material availability that swayed me.  I also have the cylinder that slides side to side.  You may want to check out my "boostinjdm's tools" thread for ideas. My name's not Jim....
Reply:As you can see from the pics below I completely agree with your idea.   I built the little press 20 years ago. It got a overhaul earlier this year when we added the air jack, and lengthened the angle iron all the way to the ground. I was cheap when I made it and just used one 20' length of angle iron and junk that was laying around (for a shot of before look on my web site below).   I was inspired to do the open sides by the big press then owned by the local machine shop where I worked for 8 years before they shut down. I then bought the big press and a good bit of other stuff from them at there auction.   I use the open sides on the little press all the time. In fact I used them about a week ago to straighten a pto shaft.   We had a press at the machine shop that the head would roll from side to side like is being discussed. That's a definite plus. I have plans worked out for the ultimate press but I don't know if I'll ever get time to build it. I have another press that someone else made and I got in a package deal. It's got some good ideas but doesn't have the open sides. I don't like it as well because of that fact. Currently it's broken with the cylinder out (didn't have the right seals in it). I've not gotten around to fixing it primarily because I'd rather tear it down and rebuild it to my plans.
