hello all newbie hear so bare with me so i picked up a welder today 1st one ever owned thought best to start out on used one to learn from iv used my buddies licon electric welder with the gas hook up but that's it  the specs i know on this are mig, 220v, was told that id need a 20-30amp outlet he said 30max which i think i have one too having a electrician friend check that out in a day or 2  this is on a dolly well its a dolly welder type as you can see from pick it had been painted over but i think i can see some original paint and that was a green darkish the guy was running a gas setup but i did not want to spend too much tho it was a good deal (also read the one story on hear about the kid who was killed from a tank and im just not at that point yet) from my looks the wiring in it is not too bad maybe indeed of a wire or 2 but thats no biggie and a good cleaning with the air compressor it also has 2 dials one for wire speed and temp which goes from 1-9 and speed not sure on how many ill have to check cost : 180 thanks in advance,Stockton M. Reply:and should i wire in a fan or 2? inplace of heatsink or ??
Reply:If I was going to add a fan I would consider just having in blow on the heatsink and not replace the heat sink.If you got it without any covers then they may have used it with a fan blowing on it.
Reply:yea it came with a panel to cover all the insides the heat sink itself does not /did not come with a cover tho most heat sinks are not enclosed  computer size fans?90mm?and do u no what type this is as in brand/model?Stockton M.
Reply:Also some other numbers/brands i found on some of the internal parts the dial for heat has some numbers on it followed by a wire im amusing its a hotness level 1-2, 5-6,9-10,13-14the heat sink has Siemens Diodensaule C67117-A5304-A514 written on it Baco PR10,       VDE 0660,       AC1-10 A 500V,    AC3-7.5A 500vBrown Bover BBC B9-01and the wire in it now has the specs of :ER70-6, AWS a5.18 ABS er70s-6, heat 40940, Dia 0.035 inch weight 11lbs, Washington alloy Co.Seems like its a good wire from what iv read Any help or ideas would be great
Reply:That 70s6 wire is solid core wire, you will need a bottle of at least 75/25 "argon/co2" gas to run it, or you will need to replace that wire with flux core wire, if that machine has the capability of running flux core that is!A lot of the older off brand welders were made to run one type wire and some the other type wire, with the more popular brands of welders offering the ability to run either wire with a simple change of plug ins somewhere on or in the welder!I just sold an old mig, it was set up to run with a bottle of shielding gas, it was not made to run flux core, it could of been taken apart and re-wired, but that would have been a pain!Did the guy you bought it from let you see it weld?Ken.#1. Reply:hey ken thanks for the input yea he never showed me but guaranteed it to work i should of asked to see it run it just had slipped by me i saw on the runner wheel thing that feeds the wire in a 2nd groove im assuming for another type wire so what all should i ?do im going over to my grandfathers to take a look at a tank he has that actually might be usable for this its a mini one 1/2 size of a normal one  should i swap out some parts or...id rather try to make this work for what i need which is building go-carts barstool racers minibikes motorcycles  small fabrication i noticed the heat setting that there were alot i thought that was good? and the fact its a 220 and not a 110v and i thought running gas is better then running flux  i know there is flux core w/o sheilding but whats bad about the current way it is ? sorry im sure this is real basic, im still picking this up i catch on quick haideas. Thanks,   Stockton M.
Reply:I think you are referring to the wire feed roller, if so, the 2 different grooves are for 2 different size wires, you say it has .035 size wire in there now, the other groove could be for .030 size wire, usually there are numbers stamped in the side of the wire feed rollers that will tell you what size wire its for, just look on both sides of the roller, the side that is stamped, is the side indicating that groove and should face you when installedif you do take the tension off the wire that is in there now, make sure you do not let the wire on the spool loose, as it will birds nest all over the place, keep a hand holding that wire tight on the spool, locate the hole in the spool for the wire to go into to hold it on the spool, feed it into that hole and bend it back the other way to hold it in the hole, now you can safely remove the spool or wire feed roller without fear of the wire birds-nesting!If you plan on using this welder mostly inside of a garage, or outside only on calm days or shielded from the wind in some way to keep the wind from blowing the shielding gas away, then a solid wire and a bottle of gas would do you well, the bead comes out much cleaner with gas, and you don't have to worry about cleaning off the slag, but you do need to make sure that any metal that you weld with this setup is really clean, no rust, grease, dirt, or paint left on the spot you plan on welding, you would need to clean it up with a grinder or something, an angle grinder works well for this.Just brushing the metal with a wire brush doesn't get enough of the crud off of there!I would look into the tank, it sounds like it might be a 40cf tank, that should be big enough for a hobby welder, if you do not know how to read the numbers on the tank, take it to your LWS "Local welder service" and have the guy there inspect it, he will be able to tell you the size, the last hydro test date and so forth, and if it can be used for your purposes. Some LWS's will require you to pay a hydro test fee if the test date is too old "Usually around $30.00 or so", some could care less about the date and will just swap you for one of their full tanks, if they go ahead and swap you tanks, I would suggest you get a mix gas of 75/25 "Argon/CO2" Did the guy give you the gas regulator with this welder?I don't see it in any of your pictures!Ken.#1. Reply:Speaking of the pictures of the welder, how about putting one on here of the face of the welder, the side that the knobs are located on.As to your original question of being able to tell what make of welder this is, that might help some here to see that side!Personally, I am thinking an old Schumacher, but its hard to tell.#1. Reply:yea il be working inside the garage so shielding gas is no prob, and the cleaning is no prob i have a couple grinders so im set. I was just thinking the same to take it to some kind of welder place to have the tank inspected/tested. No regulators were included he wanted 400 for a huge tank filled with all the regulators and hoses  but i just could not drop 400 at that point in time. How do i go about finding a LWS? I no of one but the guy is 85 and almost 100% does not have anything capable of testing it / certifying it.  Does very nice welding tho, actually he had offered his shop to me for when he retires to start up my own shop perfect size too who knows.Last recall i saw regs. and hoses on the tank so i might be set if not ill pick some up on ebay.Ill post pics of tank when i get my hands on it as well as the rollers very light surface rust ez clean up tho Thanks again 4 all the help,  Stockton M.
Reply:yea ill get some up lil later today. Stockton M.
Reply:LWS stands for Local Welder services such as gas and gas cylinder supplier/sales and welding equipment sales, not a local welding shop, unless the shop is also a welding paraphernalia supplier! They usually send the tank out to a facility that does hydro testing!#1. Reply:yes Haverford Pa  so far no number on the roller but im going to pull out the whole thing clean it check for cracks bad wires etc
Reply:I just did a quick local search of your area, and didn't come up with an LWS close by, you may need to find one a little closer to Philly.Ask that guy you mentioned above that has a local welding shop, ask him where he gets his gas from!#1. Reply:Some of the numbers on the welder are related to Oerlikon welders, but it seems unlikely to be one of those.
Reply:hears the pics of the side with heat control and speed tho the heat control is missing numbers from what i can see inside it since there are numbers 1-2, 5-6,9-10,13-14 that are labeled on the mechanism and all of them are wired too tho might not have a current but still and the whole roller set up i took apart and cleaned/inspected all good now just was dirty and the numbers on the roller it self for the small groove is 90 or 06 i think its the 90 and the big groove is 89 or 68 but i think its the 89  thanks, Stockton M. Reply:Well!First of all, if you want anyone to see if they can recognize this welder, you are going to have to back away from the machine and take a picture of the whole thing where the knobs are, and not just the knobs! It looks to me like the heat setting knob has 7 steps starting with off, its only missing the #6 label, the other knob with the red or orange front is the wire speed, and it is labeled "slow, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and fast"All the numbers look like someone made them on one of those label makers you can buy at places like Walmart!#1. Reply:ha yea sorry about that i was thinking the same thing just forgot to attach the one of the whole thing but what about the numbers on the devise inside the case the thing that controls the heat settings on all the wires it has numbers up to i think 14. Thanks,Stockton M. Attached Images
Reply:I think what you are referring to is wiring locating numbers, like for when you are looking at a wiring diagram, so that you can tell what wire is which! To determine how many heat "Tap" settings you have, turn the knob from off and count how many clicks you have!Good job on the pictures, someone may recognize it now!I think I remember seeing one something like that one, in a gas/service station once, it was a long time ago, back when station attendants actually came out to your car and filled your car up with gas for you!And most stations had a garage where there was a mechanic! This was back in the 1970's if I remember rightLast edited by Ken Dennis; 05-24-2010 at 01:34 AM.#1. Reply:Yea that makes sense    now wiring diagram that way u know what wire ur handling whenever you servicing it. clearly i was thinking way too much into it. ha1970 thats cool id like to get the colors and writing it had and restore it tho already started paiting it but if i find out what it is ill defiantly paint it to its original look. Thanks,Stockton M.
Reply:hey, counted the clicks on the heat setting and it was 13 or 14 wow cant believe that i for got haha but yea its more then 7 ! also found some numbers/make  on the lil valve type thing that takes in the gas mixture and has a wire coming out of it im assuming some sort of sensor or when to cut the gas off when you have stopped welding. thought it might help in finding out what welder this is thats all if so ill post pics and info on it Thanks,   Stockton M
Reply:well hears the tank i picked up from my grandmothers that was my grandfathers plan on getting it inspected maybe sometime this week  lil surface rust nothing that cant be cleaned up and will replace the hose lines and gauges just for safety amusing everything checks out alright Attached Images
Reply:You are kidding right? You said you wanted a tank for use with your welder right? You do not want to hook that tank up to a mig welder, not unless you want to blow yourself up!that is an acetylene tank!It is for use with an oxygen bottle, hooked to a torch for cutting, brazing and welding with a flame coming from the torch, not for use with a mig or any other kind of arc or tig welder!I REPEAT!DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THAT TANK WITH A WELDER!!!Mater of fact, do yourself and anyone else within about a city block area a favor!Unless you really know what you are doing with that tank, do not do anything with it, just leave it sit where it is and back away and have someone who knows what they are doing come over and take care of it for you!Preferably that welder friend of yours!Last edited by Ken Dennis; 06-02-2010 at 12:58 AM.#1. Reply:haha settle down bud 1. the tank is empty 2. i clearly know this would not go on a mig and i know i saw the torch on it  and i have a buddy who knows of a shop that does inspections/tests on this stuff who also do trades so if the tank does not fit ur job u can trade it/with some money or not depending and YES I KNOW its VERY flammable stuff that was/is in the tank and to handle with care i was just going to use the tank as $ or see if they are able to swap out this tank for one of the same size but with the right mix for migTHO i was thinking of roasting some marshmallows with this bad boy HAHAHA          (((((JUST KIDDING))))))
Reply:You had me wondering if you where being for real or trying to play a joke or something! After the way you talked about the tank and seeing the welder in an above picture sitting next to a gas can, and then this tank? But regardless!Welders are dangerous enough to use when you know what you are doing, a welder in the wrong hands can cause death to someone by either direct or indirect contact with the welder or items that are around the welder, in most cases its caused by careless use.Learn as much as you can about welding and welding safety now, before you ever strike that first arc!#1. Reply:ha yea i hear u and thank u 4 that too and yes iv been reading alot on safety and precautions and learning too and ill also have my buddy with me when i do strike the 1st  and even found a 220v out let in my garage Saved me 200-300 bucks am going to have it verified it is a 220 by a family friend electrician says its a 250 30amp and with the odd plug but i feel for some reason it does not put that much out seeing how its hooked up to a garage door opener with a prog thats bent to it works with that outlet (Sounds real safe NOT) but we will see. Ill work on phrasing my words better on this subject, tho one thing i fear for is somehow the tank just exploding or something like that going wrong not the tank i have now that were were just talking about but the one i get for my welder what all should i be looking out for when it comes to this  thats what bothers me the most actually just got a sign that lights up and says welding in progress so that way no one walks in when im doing so  any tips on safety would be GREATLY appreciated seeing how ur prob experienced welder of some kind Thanks  again,Stockton M
Reply:The tank that you want to use is an Argon/Co2 mix, its an inert gas mix, meaning that it is not flammable. The tanks and valve that they use are fairly safe to handle, even if one gets knocked over and the valve end sheared off, it has a safety valve built in that reacts with an open end to plug the end so that the gas doesn't come flying out!But it is still wise to only move or store tanks with their safety caps in place, and chain the tank to a wall or post when not in use, and chain it to the welder when in use and hooked to the welder!Regardless of the type of gas in the tank, the tank is never empty "As in the case of that Acetylene tank" it will still have gas inside of it, and always treat any tank as if it where full of a flammable gas, that way you will avoid any mistakes! And to that Acetylene tank, do not ever lay it on its side, it must be kept in an upright position, the bottom of the tank is full of acetone, of which will eat into the metal and seals of a regulator and rubber hoses! As to everyday safety, common sense is your best friend when it comes to safety around any shop, and that includes a welding shop!Cleanliness also plays a big part in safety, its hard to be safe when you are tripping over things, and keeping any flammables away from your work area, this includes staying away from or shielding flammable walls, shelves, and other objects around the area that could catch fire from a stray spark!I could go on forever here with the little tips on safety, but I think you get the idea from this and the use of a little common sense! In other words. there isn't a such thing as being too safe, or being too cautious, and that goes for when working with any tools or machines of any kind!#1. Reply:gotcha and when it comes to the garage stuff im clean / organized and actually have a metal pole/beam i can chain it to when not inuse thanks again for all ur input and advise !!!!!Stockton M.
