I am looking for a product that I can attached over my shoes and will protect my feet from brusing when I drop a wrench from a height of about 3 feet.  Have have found on the internet (1) "Instep Caps" by Pro-Tek-To that are thermo-plastic and held in place by adjustable rubber straps and (2)  "Aluminum Metatarsal Guard" that work with most lace type shoes.  Are there any other products that might consider? Do any forum members have experience with the products that I have found?ThanksRSOHC
Reply:What kind of a wrench are you dropping that will injure your feet in leather work-boots?Maybe you should consider grippy gloves.
Reply:I Googled the "caps" you mention.  I wouldn't waste my money.Buy youself a nice pair of steel toe leather work boots and call it done.Red Wing has a nice boot that has a steel plate over the entire top of your foot if you really want protection. What you wear on your feet is like any other tool....you have to have the right ones to do the job.Good luck.
Reply:I'll second the recommendation for the steel toed safety shoes and bootsCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:http://www.travsoutfitter.com/catalo...products_id=28I had these when working in the foundry. Awesome boots.
Reply:Hey rsohc,A good pair of steel-toe boots will serve your needs. Personally, I have purchased the Bates steel-toe for 12 years now & the wear quite well & are rugged. Our company gave $50/yr towards our boots. Here's where I get mine.Dennyhttp://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=199668Complete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Steel toe work boots will protect you just fine for most applications.  When I was working in the casting foundry out on the casting floor, we had to wear special steel toe safety boots that had the extra cap over the top of the foot.  This is because we were pouring molten metal and when it drips and splashes on the top of your boots, the laces and tongue of the boot are not going to protect you from that hot liquid metal getting into your feet.   Other than that extreme application, I have not felt a need to wear those kind of safety boots in all the other hazardous jobs I've done.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:This is a welding & metalcraft site.Bend up some 10 ga and weld a pair up.
Reply:Nobody I know want to wear metatarsil guards, which is the fancy name for what you're asking about.  There are lots of boots with them built in, or you can by those that strap on over top a regular safety shoe/boot.  Met guards are heavy, unless you pay $$$$ for the composite inserts.  They are stiff, usually very uncomfortable.I was required to wear them on one job site, and the company was required to buy them for me.  (OSHA regs).  But, they would only reimburse for the cheapest boot on the market.  Like a dummy, that's what I bought, and I wound up with blisters so bad I couldn't wear a shoe on my right foot, after a week of wearing them on the job.  Cost me 3 days off work with no pay, and a visit to the doctor after an infection set in.  I'm sure it cost my boss even more in lost productivity, as I wasn't the only one limping around on the job site....You'd be amazed at how hard it is to do anything outside your home when you can't wear shoes....So, stop dropping heavy things on your feet.  Or do right by yourself and your employees and pay for a good quality met guard safety shoe. Reply:I ended up going with these boots after getting the top of my foot burned several times while doing different welding projects.  I had been wearing "skater shoes" as my gf refers to them, and when a piece of molten metal hit them it would melt right through the tongue. These are super comfy and I am very glad i bought them.  I am not a big fan of lace up boots which is why i went with these ones.

Reply:Go and get steel toe works boats, I use them for any work i do, and yes even cutting the lawn, you'd be supprised how comforable they are and how many types there are.......You will only get one pair or feet,  not worth the risk for the 2 mins it takes to put on boots!Lincoln 175spLincoln 350MP

Reply:Make sure and get the right size and dont go for the cheap stuff, wrong size and cheap makes tend to cause problems with your feet which is why Im working through plantar fasciitis right now.

Reply:I couldn't agree more. looking for a boot with a leather tongue was difficult in this area and then adding leather laces. i have a Wolverine version of these with steel toes. i've been in this trade along while and haven't seen anyone use caps or metatarsal guards but it seems smart to. Reply:I love my Iron Worker style boots. High ankle, crape sole, but it takes a bit to wear down the clown-shoe red color!  You could just form a guard plate from sheet and lace it on.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
