Had to go out this morning and break down a Delimber this morning and bring the swivel mount back to repair the mounting plate.  Incase you don;t know what a delimber is....Well it's exactly what is sounds like.  They pull trees thru it to shear off the limbs and cut the tops off.  Before loading the trucks to send to the mill.   This is a picture of it mounted on the loader.  This will take me a few days to complete so keep an eye on the thread for updates if you are interested.... Reply:If you look close (just above the I beam frame) on this pic you can see where the bottom plate is ripped out.  We have to break it all down just to get to this piece so let the fun begin.  Oh btw there is a dime in there for scale, but can't see it once the pics were resized. Reply:Not as simple as just cutting around that square and welding in a new plate.    You have to go outside of that area and tie into the braces or it cracks right around the seams.  Here I have started cutting and removing the plate.  Most of the welds on here are fillets, and I usually lay the torch over and bevel cut down the seams.  If you watch, while you run the cut you can usually find the seam and cut the weld loose and bevel it at the same time.Last edited by MicroZone; 05-28-2007 at 11:44 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Whoah.  Have fun!  That'll be a blast to fix!
Reply:here the entire plate is removed.  now a few hundred grinding disks, and it will be ready to start fabricating the new plate. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Just to give you an idea what this thing goes thru here is a pic in action.  basically imagine hanging a 80ft Pry bar in it and with a few tons on the end of it shaking, snatching and twisting every way known to man. Reply:Looks like fun. When you work on site, who disassembles the machine?  What fuel do you use for cutting?
Reply:You get all the big jobs! Do you charge for going on-site, disassembly and retrieval?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:WOW Jackson, that sure looks a lot harder than the septic tank cover i made this week end.
Reply:I use Acetylene for all my torch work.  And as far as a disassembly goes it just depends on the situation.  Some will break it down and bring it to me, some prefer me to do all of it.  Loggers are like that especially.  They work off production and to shut down a crew to work on something like this REALLY cost them.  I usually don't mind as long as I am not overloaded with welding, and if I am most understand and have it broken down, and get it to me.  If I leave the shop they pay me the same whether I weld or not.  I get $45/hr plus a $1/mile.  I never cranked the welder this morning when I went to pick this up.  I had a 45 mile drive to get there and it was four hrs to get up there and back with it.  So it cost him $270 for this morning.   I never get left to do all of the disassembly alone I am always supplied a helper or two if needed, and honestly I don't mind.  I do not have a large number of clients, but the ones I have are good people, and will help me most anyway they can so I will do pretty much whatever they need to get it done. ~JacksonLast edited by Hammack_Welding; 05-28-2007 at 11:59 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Was it cracking around the bolt pattern or was I seeing things wrong? Seems like all the logging equipment takes a phenominal amount of beating. Nature of the business.
Reply:Yes, Sandy, it was, but the main problem is that bolt pattern attaches to a bearing, and the front part is on two rollers.  The roller shafts brokes thus putting all the force on the bearing.  This Made it crack thru the welds from the flexing and then thru the bolt holes.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:The plate I am replacing is 1/2",  Not to thick really for what most of this stuff is built out of.  Actually I have a 7" and a 9 inch and have not used them in over a year.  I run the 5" bosch grinders.  They have as much power as most of the big ones do and cut pretty fast as well.  Actually I was joking about the grinding.  I will ofcourse have to grind some, but as bad as that last pic looks the majority of that will chip off with a chipping hammer.  I still have a little more torch work as far as beveling certain areas as well.  I did not get a lot done today due to some repair calls I had to make, but I did get the new plate layed out punched and cut here are the pics of it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Might help to attach the pics..... Started laying off the center hole, cut lines and bolt pattern.  Just to show i am not prejudiced I used my victor on this rather than the Smith. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Great looking job you got there. If you saved the bolted bearing surface, could a machine shop have copied it for you to save you some time and maybe a few $?? Just a thought. Awesome looking torch cut on the large diameter hole! Was that a freehand cut or did you use a jig? Either way, nice work! Reply:Very nice torch work. Wish i could do half that well.
Reply:Mlmonte,    well........only one problem there, I am the machine shop, lol   Welding is my main work, but I have full service machining capabilities.  Well no CNC but I have manual equipment to do most anything I run into as far as my field of work goes.  I have the old piece and used it to transfer the bolt pattern to the new plate.  I could have taken the plate in the shop and drilled all the holes in the drill press or mill, but it would have taken two of us to handle it, and run the drill.  I have found it just as easy on these to weld them in and use a magnetic drill press to drill the holes.  I cut the center hole with a jig I made.  I never have liked the store bought circle cutting jigs.  Dad got the design from an old machinist friend of his who used to use it to cut a circle from plate and mill gears out of them.  That was back when a machine shop used to actually make the parts.  I'll get a pic of it tomorrow. I was hoping I could weld this in with my mig, since I never posted much work with my mig, but the wind has been steady the past day or two.  If it's fairly still tomorrow I will mig it, if not I will run a 5/32" 7018.  This isn't a piece I want to fight the wind with and risk having porous spots in the weld.  Check back tomorrow and I'll be melting some metal. Thanks For the compliments guys.   ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Here is my circle cutting jig I made.  You just center punch the center of your circle, and the point on the jig sits in the punch mark and you pivot around on it.Last edited by MicroZone; 05-30-2007 at 11:12 AM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Ever have one of THOSE days, first off the trigger on my mig gun freezes up, so I send my helper to take it apart and clean it, and just as I start to run my fill pass the dang cable going to my rod holder burns into!!!  The screws won't come out of the holder, and my help forgot to tell me two weeks ago "Uhhhh boss, I replaced the one on the trailer"  we don't have a spare!! So out we come with a big tarp to block the wind hook the mig gun back up, and Finally get the bottom welded in.  Now just have to flip it and get the other side welded this afternoon, and then drill the holes.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Wolfman,  of all the circle jigs I have used I prefer this one.  I use it quite often. I do alot of irrigation piping (Nothing Critical) for an irrigation dealer here, and I even cut my own flanges out of plate with it. If you notice the point is welded on a collar that has a setscrew to lock it.  just loosen the setscrew and slide the point to the desired radius and start cutting.  This particular Jig I also have the rear cradle on a setscrew as well.  This is not necessary unless you want to cut large circles, or will use it on different torches.  I have every brand of torch made, and like this design cause it will fit any torch with a simple slide of the rear cradle.   Last year I cut some 4ft circles with it to cap some pipe for a custom smoker I built for a client, and it cuts as true as I could ask for.    I'll look and see if I have any pics of me using it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
