i got a chance to finaly got a chance to try out the stick side of my TA-185. i start my first project tomarow if i have time to burn a few more for prcatise first.the first 2 sticks went BLAAAAAAA!!!  so nothing realy to post from them as it was my first try with stick i had to play with the amps as well as torch + or- and AC or DC so i just melted threw or splaterd every where with the first 2 sticks.the pic's represent the actual stick's in order of use.my 3rd stick was the first on to start to look like its trying to be a weld. 4th stick went well i thought.5th stick was used to go back over the 4th sticks weld bead just to see how well that went and how it would look and feel.keep a few things in mind befor tearing me up.i know i went a lil too fast. the wife had already told me its time to come in on stick 2. so i was rushing but i realy wanted to give stick a try. i also did not have any decent steel ready to weld on, no time to get some good coopons ready. so it was old rusty stuff.i was using 6013 1/8" rod DCEN at about 65-70 amps on some old scrap 1/8" steel sheet. one pice was rusty the other was galvy coated . i think for a first try and haveing only gotten to burn the 5 rods i got off to a good start by even haveing any bead at all much less one i could actualy take a pic of and not just laugh my butt off or die of embaresment.tomarow i am going to try it out on some 3/32" diomond plated steel to make some wind chime things. should weld better on that.well if i get enough rust off it that is. i have a 4'X4' pice and a 4'X8' pice so plenty to cut up and play with. wish me luck and i'll post up the pic's of the chimes when i get them welded. Attached Images summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Your welds look good.Your amp are too low for 1/8 601. I run 3/32 6013 at 60-90 amps. The puddle follows the rod very well at the proper amperage.
Reply:At least they resemble welds - I wouldn't dare post the stick welds I made when first trying with my tig machine. I'll have to give it a go again and see if I can get the hang of it. Mine looked like nothing but flux and spatter, a complete disaster !Congrats on (beginning to) learn a new skill, that's always satisfying.- John
Reply:Actually I think you did pretty well for your first go.I learned on 7014 which is a pretty easy rod to learn, IMO.I don't see it used much around here.Good job. Reply:I'm with the rest of the guys more amps. Then you can slow the travel speed some.  When you are dragging the electrode with the right amps you will know it.  On the weave weld that you made try to keep the welds over lapping one another not seperated.  Keep practicing.  You are doing very well for the first try.Be safeLarryTry not use $10.00 worth of time on $.10 job!!Miller Bobcat
Reply:Looks great, you have the idea, just need to burn 5 more sticks, then you will be perfect     .  I like #4 the best.I have the same machine, give it a shot on AC at 100 hz 25% cleaning Electrode +.  Its a whole different world.  Spatter on AC is unavoidable.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:runchmani think that means you were too far from the work pice with the rod, or too big off a arc. move in closer to the work with a smaller arc it will start to deposit.i gotta find my miller stick book i got in my student pack and go over it again.thanks for all the encuragement guys. i gotta hand it to the pipe guys out there burning this stuff all day.  it would drive me nuts having to stop every few sec. to pop in a new rod. get a big az MIG and run one bead LOL. but i can see how it can be usefull once lerned. it will defenetly up my welding thickness capasity till i get my MM210.the wife is playing hooky from work, more like staying home sick. but eather way it will alow me more time in the shop so i should have no probem getting to the chime project. well if i get some better beads that is. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Yeahhh,...Pretty nice for being a first timer! If you´re welding on 1/8 steel you´ll need 3/32 rods...as stated before if you´re welding with 1/8 rod it is nice to start with 110 amps then fine adjust...if you´re running 3/32 the parameters said before are the average amps for the rod (60-90).Ohh and watch for the galvy, pretty hazardous material. Keep up the nice welds My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:looking good as mentioned just up your amps to arround 115 and let the rod dictate your speed,it will all come together,i like to use angle iron to practice flat welding bead then 2 beads etc, keep at it and keep us posted.pipefitter.
Reply:truth be told here, i had a major brain fart. i intended to get the smaller of the 2 being the 3/32" insted of the 1/8" but got the 2 backwerds. . so although i have the wrong rod it will actualy work out better for me inthe long run, just makes the lerning a lil dificulyt as i dont have as much stuff in the right size to practise on.the dimond plate is actualy 5/32" not 3/32" again brain farted, as its almost 1/4", well at the bumps it is 1/4"i'll be playing with it soon. im in the process of cutting some up. thats proveing harder than i had planed. i'll post up some pic's when i get it done. yep more heat and less speed, and make shore the overlapping passes tuch or blead into one another. that was intended just a bit tuff when in a rush. also i need to remember the slag factor. i'm on it guys. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:fun 4 now , mate just turn the amps up a bit this will help you learn where your going to burn holes and what is too cold , when my da was teaching me to do pipe we went throgh everything that you could possibly think of to make the weld perfect , so just practice with different settings , angles, rods , i started with 4mm which was hard because of their size , we then did all the others , 3.2mm,2.5mm,4.8mm and 5.0mm , i learnt with 7018 an 7016 first then he had me using 6010,6011,6013,7014,7024 and a lot of others used in earthmoving equipment ie , 7618-m and 6218-m , you probably dont want to learn stick to this extent but just practicing will get you good at it keep up the good work mate
