welding jig table

Okay, if I can purchase one or make one with my bridgeport mill.Basically, I am looking for ideas on a jig table to weld C channel in a 4' x 8' rectangle. The squareness and flatness of the finish piece are critical.Anybody have any experience in this sort of work? Pictures maybe?thanks a lot.
Reply:I usually build stuff like that on my beam table.  The beam table consists of pipe jacks which have screw tops so they can be leveled on any uneven surface, then 2 short i-beams laid across 2 of the jacks, then 2 longer i-beams laid across the 2 shorter ones, to form a rectangular table with 2 long parallel rails.  The beam table is portable and can be used anywhere.  My beam table can go up to 12 feet long by 6 feet wide.  My friend has a few beam tables at his shop up to 8 feet wide by 25 feet long, using bigger beams, but his are very heavy and only movable with the forklift and he uses heavy duty saw horses he fabricated to support the beams since his concrete is very flat and he doesn't need to level up the tables.  I can move mine by myself by hand, which is good since I don't have a forklift!  First I level and square up the table.  I then lay whatever tube/pipe/channel/etc I am welding on top of the i-beams, square them up and clamp them down, then lay in the 2 cross pieces between the longer sides and voila, squared and flat planed rectangular frame ready for tacking and welding.  Here is a makeshift beam table we made on-site to weld some 6x10 c-channel frames.  We used wood saw horses and leveled it up with wood shims, then laid 2 of the same 6" channels we were welding on top of the saw horses and laid out the frames on top of those.  They came out very square and in flat in plane.Here is a project I did on one of my friend's beam tables.And here is another project I did on my friends' table, using the beams to form a trough to lay the rolled tubes into to line them all up for welding the sections together.I don't have any pics of mine set up and posted on the web as of yet.  The beam tables are quite handy and after using them at my friends' shop, I had to have one for myself in my little shop!Last edited by DesertRider33; 06-20-2010 at 03:46 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
