I know its somewhat of an odd question but I’m looking to….. Ok, so I was in the army as a fabricator, messed up my shoulder and was medically discharged. Long story short, I’m needing to talk to someone who works as a welding inspector to find out what I need to do to get a job as one. I’m not asking for someone to hire me now or anything. I just have some questions that I need to ask about the job. If anyone knows someone who might be willing to sit down with me to answer some questions, either let me know and I’ll PM you my number to give to them or something. Thanks in advance,Jesse

Reply:Jesse,  The first thing you need to do is go to section 8 & 9 of the application for CWI that I gave you a link to on the AWS forum and see if you qualify to take the test. I am assuming you were a metal fabricator in the army? Depending on your level of education you will need 3 to 5 years in the industry before you are eligible to take the test. You can also do a search of this forum. There is not as much info here on the subject as there is on the AWS forum but there is some.  PM me a phone # here or at AWS and I will call you as soon as I get some free time today.jrw159
Reply:Hi Jesse once you find out the answer to your welding inspector question you need to check out your opportunities with your VA and state veterans benefits representative. Since you were medically discharged you should have some retraining benefits available that give you an edge over other folks. Plus you find being a disabled vet you can get hiring preferences over your competition.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I'm already dealing with the VA's voc-rehab program, that is who gave me the idea to look into this job. But they need me to find out what I need to get in to the field. Inorder to find out, they gave me some paperwork to get filled out by potential employers. And sence I havent had a ton of luck finding potential employers in my area (the phoenix area) mainly because I dont know how to look for them (tryed google and such with on luck). So I guess one of the things that I'm needing to know is how do I go about searching for these companies. I don't know why I'ed think you guys would really know the anwser to that one but I guess it's worth a shot.I've looked at the AWS website and forum, and I mostly understand what I'ed need to do to get certified. Is that the only way to get into this field or is there another way like on the job training that may work. Anyways I get paper typed up and PM it to you guys.

Reply:You can be an inspector without a CWI.  In fact, most places don't require CWI's, especially in large-scale construction.  A lot of it is in-house ASNT Level II VT certification for QC inspectors, etc.
