beer keg grill

has any one here made a grill from a beer keg ive got one layin aroung the shop and im gettin ready to start cuttin on it and i would like to see some pictures or here some ideas first i will post pictures when i start on it thanksComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Reply:great idea, just a few observations of pits.charcoal, propane or natural gas?if coal, for the coal bed use stainless steel grate with a decent heat standoff for longevity of use.propane and natural gas burners can be found of stainless steel construction or make one from aluminum or stainless.aluminum is extremely vulnerable to electrolysis from dissimilar metals, much more so than steel.Graux Deaux left in the bottom drastically increases decomposition of any metallic material. keep her clean!maintenance will determine whether she will last a season or a lifetime.coals on aluminum will burn through rather quickly, a standoff is highly recommended.try to keep everything aluminum except for the extreme heat area.every aluminum pit i've seen out lasts the steel components, hint SS grate.....My Ignore List Hall of Shame:59halfstepBillyduaneb55jrw159mark8310Rojodiablo Sparky#1Stack of Dimes
Reply:There's heap's of hangi pots around New Zealand and Australia made from keg's, they work great.   I'd do that before wasting one on a grill, hell, any old  bit of pipe will do for that.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.

Reply:Built one in 1978,. Stainless keg  and an old milk carrier I got at the dump (the days when they would let you take stuff home). Still use it and will never sell it. It has sat outside with no cover from day one. It  was kind of my first welding project out of nesesity (got tired of buying habachi's every year). All I had was an old lincoln torpedo welder,an  acet/oxt torch and a box full of coat hangers to cut it, took hours. I started to grind the edges smooth and after an hour with little results,  and ringing ears, I gave up and let it be. I used an old Vermont style barn strap hinge , and bolted it . I made the legs stand a fold up design so I could take it with me to parties..lol.           The good old days.
