My brother just bought a '99 Fat Boy. It developed some cracks on the fuel tank, around the mounts Generally I weld aluinum diesel fuel tanks without worrying. But this is a gas tank! What can I do to get rid of the fumes. At times with the diesel tanks I wiil purge with fumes out of our fork lift..can I follow the same procedure?

Reply:Don't know if stock tanks have it in them or not but the coating called "Cream" (sealer) will pull away from the metal and become like a brittle cocoon and flake off inside your tank from the heat of the welding causing problems.
Reply:I see. This tank has been stretched and is full of putty just about everywhere. And I have been welding diesel tanks for quite some time with or without purge cleaning. Dang...I'm real lucky I guess. |
