pictures of good welds

Reply:I looked thru the computer looking to see if I saved any picts from others to explain these ideas but no dice right now. I must have dumped them all after I made comments on them.A few bad things you usually out look for...Under cut: Usually happens when you are running hot and don't fill enough. The base metal melts and flows into the bead, but there isn't enough filler to replace it. Frequently happens when doing fillets, gapped or V grove welds. often found on the upper leg as gravity tends to pull the molten metal down.Toes not tied in :  Basically the opposite of the undercut. Usually there isn't enough heat and the base of the weld just lays on the plate. Often there is a pronounced "overhang" where the bead meets the plate.Bead too concave in a fillet: On a fillet you want as close to a 45 deg angle as possible, maybe just a bit more filler. If the center is more concave there is a chance of cracking down the center. If you draw a line between the 2 legs and it doesn't go thru the weld, you need to add more filler.I'll keep my eye out for some examples as I browse and add them if I come across them..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
