im about to weld my dads 3 point linkage and front end loader frame tommorrow. im using 1/8 7018 for the major cracks and 1/8 6013 for the others. would vert down be good? i can do vert down really well but not vert up. or does it not really matter what way i weld? if i can find the camera tommorrow i will post pics of the fix.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:Sounds like a fun job you got tomarrow, but I would stay away from welding it downhand, it does not penetrate like vertical up welding. When ive got cracks to repair i usually take a fast freeze electrode, 6011 cause its whats availible, and use its deep penetrating jet action and spray it  in the veed out joint to burn a nice root in there. then ill grind it and rake out any slag left over with my chipping hammer and wire brush then finish it off with 7018 to fill and cap it off.  A few tips for that 7018 is for the first pass try a small inverted T motion and watch the puddle carefully, its just a quick whip and pause. Next pass try a U shape whip but just come away from the metal when you hit the top of the U, then after, or,  you can try a sort of upside down C type motion instead of a U, and at last do the straight across motion and watch the undercut from the previous whip and fill it before you move. With vertical up its especailly important you watch the puddle and the material to make sure its flowing properly. so point the rod at the plate your moving to at the end of the whip, and pause filling undercut before bringing it back quick across the middle and repeat.  Im not the best at explaining things, hope this helps or even makes sence to someone, its what i was goin forLast edited by Doug247; 07-26-2007 at 02:16 AM.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Uphill is the way to get good penetration on heavy pieces. Pictures would help us out here, but if these are repairs, clean the area down to bare, shiny steel first. Sometimes a bit of refit or realignment is in order, then tack into position. Before welding grind or wire wheel all tacks down to smooth clean shapes that still hold, but are easy to weld over the top of. When I started welding, every project was a perfect opportunity to get in some good practice! Let her rip uphill! Then try overhead! It's just like flat!City of L.A. Reply:thanks for the replys. when doing vert up do you still drag the rod. ie do you have your hand higher than the tip of the electrode? also no realignment is needed theyre just smallish cracks(a few big ones) that are slowly getting bigger.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:On v-up your hand will be below the rod tip. The degree will change with the weld situation. You can get from almost straight up to almost straight in all in the same pass!
Reply:ok thanks. i have never used 7018 before just that this job needs to be high strength.for building some steel up to fill a gap will it be ok to use vert down? not on a joint but next to it.http://datingsidorsingel.com/

Reply:Tanglediver, is that cat a pet? Looks like he's in a cage. Cool looking kitty.....
Reply:I didn't get time to read all the replies, so this has probably been said.  But welding up is the only way to go for structural. The ONLY time I weld down is with 6010 on fillet closed roots as a cleaning/sealing pass that will be covered with wire or 7018 later.  Or on very light guage material like 16-24 gauge.
