Here is the tractor repair i was talking about in the '7018 positions' thread. I forgot to take pictures before i started but i took photos afterwards instead.By the way im only 15 so i think im doing pretty well. It was all done with my new stick welder. A bit of 6013 on the not so major cracks. Both 1/8 rod at about 140-155 amps.next postLast edited by MicroZone; 07-28-2007 at 12:09 AM.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:continuedthis was the major repair i did on the three point linkage. it has 1.3 metric tonnes of weight it has to lift too.what do you think of this repair job?Last edited by MicroZone; 07-28-2007 at 12:11 AM.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:it was probly more 5/32 rods.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:Honestly? Well, from what I can see, which isn't much due to the picture quality, it looks a bit on the cold side. It looks like you covered all the areas of the break...again, from what you can or can't see. The question is, how far did the weld penetrate? On a side note, when taking close-up pics like that, if you're using a digital camera, there is a close-up feature usually denoted by a flower icon. Hit that and it will auto focus closer. Reply:oh ok thanks, they penetrated quite a lot, ill try that feature on the camera next time. and thanks for changing the picture format too.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:Just looking at the weld it looks like it was done in the verticle position and down hill. It should be done up-hill that way it would get better penetration..
Reply:Make sure if you're repairing cracks, you take the crack out - i.e., grind it out and/or follow the crack to at least the end, then drill it. Otherwise, the stress will continue, especially on heavy equipment, and will continue cracking. Great job for being 15 years young. Reply:i hope to try and get my stick tickets soon. cos i wanna leave school soon and do an apprenticship. also the cracks were ground out then welded past both ends of the crack.http://datingsidorsingel.com/
Reply:Not trying to know you, but giving helpful advice.  I work on this stuff day in and day out.  All of your welds by the looks of the pictures are vert down.  You need to be running vert up with a 7018.  If you look at your welds that are all lower in the center than the edges this makes for a weak weld.  On what you are welding you need to grind the cracks to create a bevel, and then drill a hole dead thru the center or the ends ot the crack. this will stop it from running.  In most cases just grinding the crack is not enough unless you can key hole the root and burn the ENTIRE crack out especially at the ends.  Then take a 7018 1/8 is plenty big for what you are doing, and weld it uphill.  It will take practice, but a down hand weld will not penetrate, and leaves a concave weld bead.  Especially on your lift arm swivel ends.  You would be better to take the arms off, and weld them flat.  I'll almost bet you that they will crack again very soon.  For 15 you are doing very well, but start practicing on your uphill.  If you are planning on getting your tickets then you will have to do it uphill better to start now than later.  Keep at it, and you will have it before long....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I honestly didn't catch part of that, but I am in TOTAL agreement with Sandy, STAY IN SCHOOL!!!  at the very least you will need a highschool degree to get anywhere in this world.  Keep practicing, finish school THEN work on getting certified and go into the workforce.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Ya man, stay in school.  Don't drop out.  A lot of places and future welding or fabrication courses require at least a grade 12 education.I mean, even if you just sqeak by to have it "on paper," you'll find it way easier to find employment later on, regardless if you use what you get from highschool or not!Honestly, I never welded until I graduated (2002...), but Shop kept me through everything else!  I liked building stuff!
Reply:My thoughts from when I was an employer.  3 guys apply, all have SOME skills.  One doesn't have a HS diploma.  Now I only have to decide which of the other 2 to hire.  Your attempts are great.  Hammack said it though.  On equipment, 7018 verticle up or remove the part and do it flat.Burn all the rod you can.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Let me give an example of the value of a diploma. We have a couple of forklift/skid steer drivers that are some of the best equipment operators around. they can operate any piece of equipment you put them on. On the otherside of town they could be getting $15/hr if they had a diploma. My boss is paying them $7-$8/hr. They stay here because it's the best they can do.
