I had some pipe to play with today so figured what the heck.  Lets play with the mig a little bit.  This is some pipe work used in Agricultural irrigation systems.  8" Galvanized .120 wall   The galvanizing on this stuff is next to impossible to get off, but I have found that a disk designed for aluminum works pretty well for cleaning it off.  Its a low pressure pipe. 80-120 psi.  Only specification is it can't leak.    I usually do this with a 6010, but Figured I would take the mig and do one in a fixed position on the stands, and the next one where I could roll the pipe.  Machine is a Lincoln Powermig 255  on 75/25 with .035  70s-6.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:first one I welded uphill without rolling the pipe.  You'll have to excuse my ignorance.  I don't work enough pipe to know the position names.  Second one I rolled as I welded around the joint.Finished, pressure checked and loaded on the truck ready to head out to Florida in the morning.... Reply:looks good!
Reply:Great work, again. I've got some heavy galvy stuff around. I normally just fight with it as condition of using free iron. The other day I tried a stainless disc,, no significant change in results. I tried a concrete disc,, no significant change in results. The one thing I haven't tried is an aluminum disc. I just don't have a reason to have one around. Dern.
Reply:Well the Galvanizing on these pipes and fitting is very thick.  You can actually grind it off and then heat the area with a torch and the glavanizing will flow onto it from the surrounding areas.  The problem I was having was that the disk would clog up and quit cutting.  An aluminum disk won't load up with the Galv. like the steel disk do.  I actually ran across it by mistake I grabbed the wrong grindr, and thought, dang this disc is cleaning well.  then I looked and was like maybe I should try that again.  and it seems to work pretty well.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Jeez, stick and TIG and MIG?  You -are- a multiprocess-man!   Nice work Jackson, but you still don't take as good a picture as Zap.    Try macro/micro mode on the camera.  It's often the mode with the flower icon for it.  (no joking there, newer digital cameras usually do have the flower icon for close-up/macro/micro mode). And you left out the coin in the picture, for scale reference ya know.
Reply:thanks for the compliment Moonrise.  This camera doesn't have a close-up feature, but for $50 what do you expect.  A better camera is on the list to get when I head back to town shopping this weekend...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Nice work.  Mig is FASTER.  I do a lot of galvanized cell towers.  All the galv has to come off for a nice weld.  All welds are visiual AWS inspected.  I only use aluminum disks now because they don't load up and grind carbon steel like crazy.  Where I buy the aluminum disks, they cost the same for a box of 25 4.5" as the type 27 steel ones.  I also use a die grinder to get rid of the galv with an aluminum TIN Bit.  Works the balls.ONCE I got too much galv fumes.  Never again.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Looks good.. Dont forget to record your mileage.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Hmm, I always just used intershield or dual-shield for galvanized steel.  Boils it out nicely.  Wouldn't work with solid-core wire.Very nice looking welds man!
