My brother broke something, and it is on a little vespa.  Right off of what I would call the crank case (though I may not be right), is part of a threaded nut thing that broke.  I am assumint that this is cast alumunim maybe?  If so, can it be MIG welded?  If so, what considerations to I need to take in mind?I have a mm 251 and a spool gun (30A).  I have two tanks of gase, 80/20 co2/argon and 100% argon (for aluminum).I know there are durarods out there, but do those work on cast?  Can they be picked up at the local welding store? or are they a special order?Shoot, as I haven't seen it first hand, I don't even know if it is aluminum.  Maybe it is still, but same questions apply.  Here is a pic he sent me on it (and a video).  I would appreciate your suggestions.   I don't have stick or tig, so I am trying to fix this with the above options if possible.pic: Attached ImagesThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Not any easy fix to do in place, can you remove some parts to get better access? If you can get access to it, it wouldnt be to hard to build it up with weld, re-shape and drill/tap the hole again.  I guess it can be done with MIG, but it would be much easier to be done with TIG.  Its just for the kickstand right?  So you might be able to get by with inserting a rod in the hole and welding that in place?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Okay, first off that looks like cast aluminum, I don't have a lot of experience with cast aluminum, but the little that I have, I have only used TIG with 4043 rod. The part needs to be pristine, no dirt, grease, nothing just the aluminum. An idea that has worked for me to know when I am at the right temp for welding is to blacken the surface with an O/A set up, when the black(soot) goes away it is hot enough to weld. Next thing is if you don't feel comfortable with it, then have someone that has experience with cast aluminum do the job. I did see that you didn't have TIG, I am not being ignorant just giving you advice.
Reply:Okay-from the video's description this is a broken, tapped castingboss, which has a bolt threaded into it and the bolt holds the tension endof the return spring for the kickstand. IOW--there's a good amount ofside force placed on this tapped hole.1-For a first time, successful repair, drain the oil/gas, remove the engineassembly from the bike and take it to a shop that does case work with TIG,is wholly familiar with tapping/drilling/metric threads, etc.       There's several ways to address the broken boss, it just dependson the deal.....once it can be inspected on the shop bench.2-Trying to do this in the frame, won't work, for a bunch of reasons.Just 'becuz' you can see the broken part, doesn't mean it can actuallybe repaired in place.Blackbird
Reply:The simplest solution I can see would to be finding a different spring to attach at a different point in a close proximity of where the original one goes.No engine removal or taking it to a shop required, just a little alteration to whats already there. In fact the original spring may still be able to be used.I am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
