I have almost finished my new wood fire. The fire box is from 8mm plate with 5mm thick pyro glass in the door and a old cast truck brake drum sits on top if it.I fired it up tonight for the first time to burn off all the muck I still have to paint it make a heat shield for the back of it and line the inside with fire bricks and then install it. It has been burning now for 4 hours and it is hot!. SimonLabel EverythingMetal Fabrication - Welding Repairs - Wrought Iron - Sign Writing - Custom Decals.
Reply:How ironic that you down-unders are trying to keep warm while we suffer from the hottest day of the year!  Projected to hit 100 degrees. Is the brake drum welded to the firebox?Last edited by 69 chevy; 08-08-2007 at 08:10 AM.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:Looks nice and toasty..Yep..90 Today ..100% humidity..Dew points in the mid 70'SUgh.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I am hoping not to have to use the new fire for long, The days are getting warmer again, In mid summer last year it was about 45 C (113 F) it was too hot to touch a bit of steel without gloves.69 chevy the brake drum just sits on top of the fire box it has a 10mm thick lip that acts like a locating ring, I will run a bead of fire sealant around the drum on assembly.SimonLabel EverythingMetal Fabrication - Welding Repairs - Wrought Iron - Sign Writing - Custom Decals.

Reply:I have every sympathy for those that must be under a helmet to make a living under such intense heat conditions.   I sweated up 3 pair of gloves Monday morning.  Cripes, I felt like a rotisseire chicken!  That's the day I quit welding until the temp lowers from hot to warm.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:you guys need to move here to Canada! It was a chilly 92' here today  Actually I'm as far south in Canada as you can get - 20 mins from DetroitFire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG
Reply:Micro I plan to line the back with fire bricks, on each side there are two 300 x 150 x 50mm square cast blocks from an old school heater to act as heat sinks, I plan to leave the bottom as plate to make it easy to clean, But I could always pour a refractory cement base.SimonLabel EverythingMetal Fabrication - Welding Repairs - Wrought Iron - Sign Writing - Custom Decals.
Reply:Don't forget that it is the middle of winter in OZ right now.  Wait until December and the down-unders will be complaining about the heat. Reece
Reply:I installed the fire today it was pretty straight forward I had already installed a new 3 case flue kit at the beginning of winter this year, so out with the old fire and in with the new I had to shorten the 6" inner flue pipe about 8".The old fire with the fire screen I still have to finish and paint. The new fire installed. It is burning and it is heating nicely, I have an electrician mate who is going to install a 5" fan and some ducting to take hot air from the room with the fire and blow it out at the other end of the house into the hallway between the kids rooms, the fan will move 36 litres of air a second or 130 cubic meter an hour.SimonLabel EverythingMetal Fabrication - Welding Repairs - Wrought Iron - Sign Writing - Custom Decals.
Reply:wouw welder.man such a nice job...I like the recycling of the drum...this might sound stupid but couldn´t avoid it... I real long time ago about the brake pads that had asbestos, which caused cancer... I´m pretty sure you know about this...so... does the drum has any left over? did you clean it? did you used asbestos pads before? Just some caution considerations! I think they stopped using them long time ago, but its never too late to check... maybe micro, zap or ztfab might know...My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:nicely done. just make sure the air mover isn't sucking any CO out of the fireplace.with full intent and better sense to recognize what is false and part with it.
Reply:That looks really good finished.  Very professional looking!
Reply:nice job Simon when i first saw it I thought it was for your shed with the brake drum on it Looks very good have you paint the grill yet it will all lot great when your done
Reply:I figured since some of you were complaining about the heat, I'd get my 2 cents worth in.  Here's a pic I took near Baghdad of the OAT (outside air temperature) gauge on my helicopter.  Inside the cockpit it's even warmer.  The gauge is reading about 55C which is around 130F.The woodstove/fireplace looks really nice BTW.
