Here are some examples of practice pieces I made before certifying. The scrap bin at school is loaded with these after a semester!  The plate @ the right is typical. 1" thick beveled at 22.5 degrees each side to equal a 45 degree Vee groove with 1/4" or 3/8" backing. The center background is a vertical plate done with 1/8" E7018 @ 118 amps and just a vertical downhill pass on each side to repair undercut, which is allowed. The foreground center plate was not completed (I ran out of time before actual testing) but was run overhead @ 120 amps. The plate at the left I cut in half to make a hitch ball mount for the forklift!  After the plate cools, their are two sections called "coupons" cut horizontally from the test plate that are 3/8" wide each. These two pieces were done with mig I think @ 18.6 volts and 175 ipm and 25-30 cfm, maybe, I can't recall? This is whats left of the plate after taking out the coupons. The coupons are then side bent into a letter "U" shape in a shop press to expose any weakness, with 1/8" max size and 3/8" total for defects. ~~~~~~~~~~~~Get Bent!Last edited by tanglediver; 08-12-2007 at 06:30 PM.City of L.A. Reply:I'm sure some frown upon it, but some cheater tips to help get through x-ray/visual.  In place of the downhill passes on the side, bouncing a stiff wire wheel along the edges of the bead will knock down the sharp spots.  You can then take a flat file kept flat against the plate, and use it to feather the edges.    Not sure how that flies for DOT stuff, but it will fly for D1.1 stuff.

Reply:Charpy isn't quite hardness. It is for toughness. Impacts the test piece. Test is often done at or below minimum service temp for the material, as brittleness increases as temp goes down. Reply:I worked at a place for 9 1/2 years that did testing like that...one at a time and only in emergencies. There were normally 3 of us fully certed but if someone got hurt or such it was testing time...lolAnything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT

Reply:How is it going i new to this forum and while looking through it I came across you test plates and I am having trouble with the over head plate i can see what is happening in the groove fro about the first to about the fourth pass. I was just wondering i you might have any suggestion thaks. i think i might have put the first post int the wrong area thanks again
Reply:Stick or wire? If you describe the trouble in detail, folks here will be able to help you, pictures are a plus! How is your vertical uphill welding?City of L.A. Reply:Hows it going everybody. It is stick 7018,22.5 bevel each piece, 1/4in.root,and 1/4 inbacking bar.The vertical test plate passed. Now working on overhead plate 1'' thick. I cant seem to see whatbis happening in the groove for passes 1to 4. Iwas wondering any body had any suggestion for this.I have tried raising the plate 1'1/2" over myhead to seem if that would help but that made the welding of the plate really tough because  i had to stretch out to weld them. thanks again
Reply:Why can you not see what is happening? Your question is somewhat vague. You may wish to start a new thread with your question, cause folks have already seen this one and may pass it by. You will have to decide whether to weld in a left to right manner or a front to back manner. I prefer to weld from back to front and I stand a little to the left, just my preference. I choose to watch in front of the puddle so I can see where I am going. Sometimes the smoke builds up, but aside from having a ventilation duct right there in the booth, maybe a fan will help.City of L.A. Reply:Wait wait wait, you got to do a downhill pass to cover up undercut?  Bastards made me do it 3 cover passes without being undercut. Some schools aren't always about doing it right. At some schools it's more about the number of students passing (certing). Of the 3 area places to get certed here the toughest one to get out of is the LWS that brings in a CWI. There's no government dollars or programs there to lose out on. You do it right or you do it again...lol...like it should be.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:That is not a call the school made and they are a non profit school. That is from somewhere higher up the chain of command, be it the city or AWS, I am unsure, but I could find out after next week, when the fall semester kicks in.City of L.A.
