Hello, we are cleaning up the shop at my work and they are considering selling a Thermal Arc Power Plus TA 10/270 H which is a Welder Generator for $500. We dont know alot about it but it did run when we aquired it. We have never used it, we installed a whole house generator at a customers house and to reduce cost agreed to take this in. This is really big, it weighs over 500 lbs. It does not include welding leads. It takes gasoline or natural gas. I plan on testing it later this week. It appears to be a great condition. I am told this is about 10 years old and sells for 12k new. The sales brochure can be found here, it has the honda motor, http://www.oxypro.ab.ca/products/the...es/84-9814.pdfNow my questions... I am very interested in buying it for my self. How do I find arc welding leads for it? How much will they cost?Is this seem like a good deal?Anything I should look for we running it?If it gererates power we can assume it will weld also correct? I have no way of testing welding function.I would use this for light welding, and mainly generator use for when power goes out. I realize its overkill for what need. What do you guys think?
Reply:Yes it is 10+ years old, I could be wrong but I think they stopped making them a while back. The one I bought 15 years ago cost around $3800. It has performed very well for me (I still have/use it). I have carbon arced all day long with it at full load with no problems. I did have to get the low oil shut off switch bypassed with a low oil pressure switch to keep it from shutting off at random. Long story short I had to store it for three years. I would recommend taking it to a certified Honda dealer and have the motor serviced if it has not been run for more than 2 years. You can get leads for it at any welding supply store, expect to pay anywhere from $1.20 a foot to $2.30 a foot depending on what size lead. You will also need an electrode holder and a ground clamp. The TA10 has Dinse connectors on the front, so you will also need two male Dinse SK-50… I think, I'll have to look to be sure.If it works, yes it is a good deal. How many hours does it have on it? There should be an hour meter on the front panel. No you cannot assume that if it generates power that it will weld. You can down load/print the owner's manual from the Thermal Arc web site.Good luck and keep me posted, if you are not too far away, and it turns out to be toast, maybe I could use it for a parts machine. Will
