?? Excalibur 7018-1 ??

I'm looking to find out if anyones used this Lincoln rod.    If so, can you describe why, and what you were using it on.     Also if you can, describe any different weldability characteristics compared to Excalibur 7018 MR or other.      Would also like to know any known drawbacks of it compared to other 7018s.
Reply:I use 7018MR a lot. The MR rod has a thinner layer of flux on them than the normal 7018. I find them much easier to weld with, especially out of position.
Reply:All I will use is 7018-1. I mostly weld on bridges.  I am the only customers GTS gas supply ever orders it for and keeps 100lbs in stock for.  I got 500lbs on 1/8 in the shop and 300lbs of 5/32.  If you like the old LH78. It runs simliar to that. 7018-1 is the only thing that will weld right on A325 weathering steel.  A325 is what most bridges are built with now.7018-1 runs just like regulate excalibur, just a little slower freezing.  It also has a better wash in than regular 7018 at higher amps.   I typically run 5/32 7018-1 at 230-240 amps when I am welding on bridges.  You get a lot of under cut at that kind of amps with regular 7018.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers

Example:  A709 GR50W

Reply:There are plenty of fillers out there that work on weathering steel, and most are chosen for color match for applications other than bridges.The 7018-1 is all you will see on bridge work, because the PQR's for bridges require impact testing, and the 7018-1 is designed to meet impact properties at -50°, vs the -20° typical for 7018.
Reply:I see some 7018-1 on bridge work, as far as stick I see alot more 8018-C3.  It also meets lower impact property temps but has the higher tensile strengh and gives a good color match to weathering steel.  Supe, your right about being alot of fillers out there for weathering steel.Last edited by Josh Flynn; 08-09-2010 at 12:02 PM.

Reply:It maybe me but the 8018-C3 seems to be a little more fluid then 7018.  I have never been involved in any boiler work.  What time of work is it ( heavy plate, SS, Alloy steel) or what type of process do yall use?
