Anyone here have or use a spray torch? The welder in the maintenance department where I use to work had one and I only seen him use it one time, I think he welded something cast iron with it.Anyway I was wondering if this is something that you guy's use, or is it a specially tool?John
Reply:definately a specialty tool, look up castweld and his previous postsDynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:got a victor. i use it to build up cast surfaces or to build up "ears". Have not had a lot of luck fixing cracks in the middle of a complex casting like a cylinder head. surface buildup of pits etc works real good. different hardness of powders. some are very machinable and some  are meant for hardsurfacing. Cam shaft regrinders use them to put lobes back on. Pretty simple to use. the original kit was kinda spendy, $500 for the torch and 3 bottles of powder. They also have aluminum powder. I have not used this. The iron powder is kinda pricey per pound but a little goes a very long way.
Reply:I think that you are talking about metal spraying.   I know some people who have that equipment, but I have never seen it done.   I have even seen samples in which the person applies a metal spray to something like a leaf!  I think that he first coated it in zinc, at a very low temperature, and then was able to spray a higher temperature on top of the zinc, without burning up the leaf.I understand that there are systems that use oxy-acetylene for heat, and others that use electricity.   I think that some systems use wire, I guess some use powder.I too would be interested in more information on the subject, maybe some good links.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:Victor makes a good spray powder torch.  They equipment is expensive and the powder can be really expensive.  I have only used one at I have tested a torch we have repaired, and many years ago when I worked for LWS, I sold powder to a few customer that had one.  The process is mostly used for build up or hard facing an edge. The ox/ace flame heats the base metal, and when it almost molten, the powder is added to the flame and it builds up where ever you hold the flame.  It is very neat process.  I have seen it used on small auger teeth and the teeth on the machine  used to dig up asphalt before resurfacing road.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
Reply:I use a powder torch, mostly to repair cracked iron heads. Did a little hard facing, and some worn shaft build up. While simple and easy to use there is a narrow temperature window that will produce sound cast iron repairs.Peter
