I had a ring gear bolt back out and punch a hole thru the axle housing at the top and forward section of the rear. The hole is about 2" x 1". The rear is from a 1965 Lemans. My question is, can this be repaired by welding and could this be done with a small Lincoln MIG welder??? Thanks, Vic...
Reply:You need a special rod to weld cast iron, I think it is high nickle. If you weld it with your regular mig it will not hold and crack out. Also you need to preheat the cast iron when you weld. Reply:Yes, it can be welded with MIG as the part is not cast iron but cast steel. It is weldable with ER 70 S6, E71T1 (flux core) or Gas Less flux core, E7018 (stick rod).
Reply:Best bet is nickel brazing rod. You can find it by Bernzomatic in many HD, OSH surprisingly. It has a blue flux on it. If you weld it, you'll likely have some cracking issues. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Center sections are not cast iron. The can be mig welded, but you need a good size machine to do it correctly.
Reply:Its cheaper to throw it away and buy a used one. Those cars were a dime a dozen when I was a kid and many other rear ends interchange with that model.

Reply:I believe Nodular Iron is also favorable for welding, Look at the casing, are there other parts on it that are welded, like the spring pearches or the arm brackets, If I remember right those had coils with trailing arms, the ears are all welded to the housing. That right there tells me it can be welded. Best bet is stick welder with 7018 or if you only have AC stick use 7014 or 7024."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400 |
