Reply:I don't know what to say except watch out for the fingers and wear eye protection.  I guess my only question is why not just hold the jig saw like it was intended?Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:I must be missing something here. With the vise and that steel you are  cutting how about a sawzall or angle grinder with a 1/16'' wheel?

Reply:At least you're doing something constructive with your time.  You could've used a skil saw with an abrasive blade to do your cutting for cheap.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Originally Posted by WeldordieI think the commentators have been way too harsh in their criticism of your saw arrangement, and they haven't even tried to use it.  What I see in your device is your imagination, leading to a simple way to stabilize both the work piece and saw.  Seems to me that this would be quite safe to use, and it, apparently, allows full control of the pressure of the saw blade against the piece.  This is just the kind of innovation that leads to the discovery of greatness.A couple of weeks ago I rigged up a similar device to cut firewood to stove length on the back of my pickup.  The saw holder is just a piece of 2 x 4 that I attached to the tailgate with a tie-down strap.  Worked great.  Photos to follow in the next thread...

Reply:It's always better to be BEHIND the blade of any saw, especially a reciprocating type saw with no outside support to control a blade break or a blade gaurd to deflect it.  Please wear a full face mask, you can't see with a glass eye.Weldordie - You are playing with fire there.  No face mask, shorts and tennis shoes, and maybe at best a 1/2" lag bolt and some strapping holding down a chain saw??  I hope you don't ever experience a kickback.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:I'm confused   What's with the home liability projects? That chainsaw has me totally speachless - why wouldn't you just slide the logs out past the tailgate and hold the saw with both hands - or are you already missing one hand? Fire!, Fire! Reply:a wood skill saw will not work for very long trying to cut metal.  doesnt spin fast enough, i think around 4000 rpms to a chop saw taht goes at like 16000chop saws are very cheap, hundred bucks for a cheap one, i spent 250 on my dewault one works out great

Reply:The chainsaw is a bit skeery but I dont see whats wrong with the jigsaw mount.  Among motorized cutting tools a jigsaw is probably the least dangerous unlike cuttoff blades spinning at 10000+ rpm.  The kickback on a jigsaw is fairly mild.  If used with reasonable care and sensitivity to the feed rate I dont see a problem.  It doesnt win any beauty prizes but for ingenuity and initiative it does pretty good.355# Hay Budden3# Hofi HammerPropane ForgeIdealarc TIG 300/300AllStates Oxy Propane torchSmith Little Torch

Reply:I say the problem with the jig saw bolted to the vise idea is that it's not gonna work...plain and simple...and as far as the chainsaw fiasco....what happens if he loses his grip as he's hunkered down cutting a block and the blade swings back and whacks him in the face....unbelievable, that's all I can say.

Reply:Just in case some of the perusers of this string would like to better inform themselves on injuries suffered by chainsaw users... please try this site:http://www.elvex.com/facts08.htmAs one can, plainly, see... most of the injuries occur on the lower extremities, and I'm willing to bet almost all of the users were holding the saw with both hands.  These types of injuries would be almost impossible to happen on my tailgate saw, so it logically follows that my saw is actually safer to use than when free-handing with two hands.  I'll be sure to post back, if I ever hurt myself by using my saw.

I would feel pretty bad if something like that happened to somebody that copied a design of mine. Or if little johnny (read son) decided to be like dad/grampa and saw some wood without supervision and ended up hurt because I didn't take 20 min a build a guard.Again, i think you have a good idea but there is always room for improvement.(This post isn't intended to be negative at all so please don't interpret it that way)
