I customer brought me some heat exchangeres.  They welded on the ends and didn't end up in the right spot.  SO they cut em off and tacked them in place with some 80T.  There is a gap in all of em.  These have to be air tight, so I tigged em.  Got almost 2 done today while doing a bunch of other stuff to.There are 10 in all.  I was using 1/8" filler because of the gap.  I did the first one with the V350 and it went well.  Today I tried the arcmaster 185 because it has pulse.  I messed with the pulse.  First I used 185/90 @ 60% on the high side at 4 hertz.  It worked pretty good.  Not quite enough heat, so I went to 185/125 @ 75% on the high side.  Then I turned the Hz down to 3 and things went smoother.  The caps on the bottom ends left and right are what I had to put back on.  Here is a pic of one of their tacks.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I wanted them to stay exactly where they put them, so I tacked em on all 4 corners, then welded from the corner to the tack on both sides, then ground the tack off and finished the bead.  Beads are >>>>>>>> like this because of my method.Plate is 1/8", piece is 1 1/8"  Thin to thickLast edited by David R; 09-29-2007 at 05:58 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Look at the nice job of cutting off this one. That is a piece of 1/8" filler in one of those slots.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:They left you some mess for sure, but I'm unsure as to why you're tigging them. Just because you can? If 10 of those rolled into my shop it would be wire without a doubt.Owner of Bushwacker Mobile WeldingPictures

Reply:I tried to wire weld a few of the last batch.  some leaked, the ones I tigged didn't.  I like the bare wire, but these need to be air tight.  There are some tricky corners, I had to use a small long cup to get at them.  I will post a few more pics tomorrow.  They were mig welded the first time and even going over them with the tig a bunch of crap came up to the top.  After the first one, I ground off all the original weld.  At first I thought the extra weld would work as filler to help fill in the big gap.  But it was full of stuff and made it harder to weld.   There are inside corners too.  I was going to tig the corners and mig the long runs.  I could, but once I started with the tig, I decided why stop.  I had to weld to the tacks, then grind them off so that would have been more starts and stops to have leaks.  I'm going for NO leaks.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I did a couple more today.  First I tigged the hard parts and finished em off with the mig.  Here is a pic of the gap and how I got it hopefully sealed with the TIG and 1/8" fillerReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Here are a few MIG welds on the same stuff where the going was good.  Still a big gap to fill and the 1 1/8" to 1/8" made it a little tricky, but I got it.Last edited by David R; 09-30-2007 at 07:12 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloDave, the mig welds look really really good. Did you consider migging it, and then just tigging the start/ stops to seal any pinleaks?? I have done that on a few duct pieces lately. It has worked for me pretty well.
Reply:Originally Posted by David RI tigged the tough spots then migged the long clear runs to the tacks, ground off the tacks and finished the beads in the middle.  Took 1.5 hours to do one unit both sides.  MUCH faster then the first one I tigged the whole thing.  3 out of the first 4 done, 6 more when these are done.David
Reply:Heck yeah, What ever process fits best and it was suggested here to migit.  I was concerned about having enough heat to get into the 1 1/8" plate.  I could, but jumping the gap with the mig was the tricky part with out burning through the 1/8".Going in early to finish the last one this morning.  Gotta go to bobcat and do some work there today too.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
