I want to weld a 12mm thick by arc welding and using size 10 or size 12 electrode. How much the recommended current shoud i use?
Reply:I wonder what it is that you might be welding?mild steelpipeplatecast ironaluminumstainlesstitanium I wonder what you are welding it to?I wonder if it's load bearing, like a bridge column or maybe a trailer, or could it be a lamp shade holder?More info would help. What type of electrode?  Is it AC or DC?***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:What he said plus what's a size 10 or 12 electrode? Is this same strange code like 10 being 10/64ths?
Reply:What on earth is size 10/12 electrode???
Reply:It can't be 12 mm plate and a 10mm (.400") rod.   3/8" =.375"DavidLast edited by David R; 10-04-2007 at 10:28 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Oh, I must have missed the mm part.

Reply:is welding  12mm thick mild steel plates.
Reply:Not enough info but in the US we use a rule of thumb that says the dia of the rod in thousands of an inch is the number of amps.   So a 1/8"  = 0.125"  would be about 125A.  I think this works out to about 4A per mm.  This rule is only a rough guide and the dia refers to the dia of the steel rod inside the stick355# Hay Budden3# Hofi HammerPropane ForgeIdealarc TIG 300/300AllStates Oxy Propane torchSmith Little Torch
Reply:40 amps per mm thickness.    1mm = .039something inches. The rule of thumb is for one pass welding.  Multi pass you can go less and it depends on the diameter of the wire part of the rod and what kind it is.Which brings me to another rule of thumb (put thumb smily here).001 " for one amp works for rod size too.  1/8" rod AROUND 125 amps. Or 40 amps per mm of rod. That is why I asked about 10 mm? rods.  400 amps?David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:So 2.0 mm start at 80 amps.  2.6 104 amps. These are only recommendations.  You may have to turn it up or down depending on the type of electrode you are using.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
