Hi y'all , i haven't been around here for long time but i'm back and i need some help , i want to make Bead Blasting tire seating tool  from a used freon tank  but i don't know how much pressure the freon tank is capable of holding , i cant found out because doesn't says on the tank itself and i don't have anyone to ask only you guys and i would appreciate the help that i can get from you. My question is, can the freon tank hold 145 psi or 10 bar of pressure ?Here is the video where you can see what is Bead Blasting tire seating tool:http://youtube.com/watch?v=ld5h2LifTz4
Reply:No idea how much they will handle. Ever look for an HVAC forum? I bet those guys would know. I would bet a freon tank would handle 115 or 125 at least. I just bought one off Epay a few months ago. It only goes up to 135 and I rarely get it over 115. Still blows a Bobcat tire on at 115. My truck tire guys use 100 for my big 24's even. You may not need as much pressure as you think.Mine is based on a Craftsman 5 gal air tank, FWIW.

Reply:#1, that is an understatement of the power in one of those tires. i've SEEN the aftermath of a bead-lock that was not properly put onto a tire. the guy over-inflated it and the rim flew THROUGH the cage, THROUGH the aluminum roof, abd it landed in a cornfield about 100 yards or so away. so yea. dem der things can kill. #2, a Freon tank is good for about 200 PSI by modern standards (last i heard from my teachers @ UTI about 6 monhs ago). if they are not new, i have no clue. the EPA is VERY strict on that kind of stuff any more. also note, if you have true freon (r-12) make sure you sell it to purge it. the stuff is about 16 dollars a pound now. R-134a is the newer stuff and is a bit cheaper (not sure how much, ~8-12 bucks maybe?). anyway, those tanks are fairly fragile. after the temperature changes from when the tanks are opened to fill a vehicle's AC system, then they are sitting to come back to room temp, then they are opened agin, etc. this can make them brittle. if i were you, i think you'd be better off using a propane tank or a keg. the safelst way (if you have the benders/rollers) woudl be to roll a tube of 1/4" plate and cap it off. that way you can control the size and shape to fit your needs. there's obviously going to be a difference between that of a honda tire versus a semi-truck wheel. P.S. after you get it done, for some fun, wait till a guy goes to the bathroom, fill the nozzle with flour, or powdered sugar, (or used oil if you want to be really REALLY mean), load the air, shove the nozzle under the stall door and fire!!! hours of fun for the whole family. hehehehe.later,Andy
Reply:To answer the question, " Will a freon bottle hold 145 PSI. The answer is YES. As to what you will do with it, and wether the area you weld on will still be structurally sound, that will depend on your welding ability, and the machine you use. Suggestions??? : Clean the tank. Freon is oily. The oil will contaminate your welds. Be sure the bottle is already empty, it is a crime to dump freon into the air, and it is morally wrong, to boot. After you get done welding on it, paint the bottle so no one mistakes it for freon, and so you don't get hassled by the authorities. Lots of kids steal freon to get high, and sherrifs and park/ forest rangers are well aware of this fact, and may give you a game of 20 questions when they see the bottle. Just paint it some other color than freon green, or purple. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:Anything wrong with buying one already made? Pressure vessel welding has a cert. to go along with the job for a reason. City of L.A. Reply:Here we go again.Redneck engineering again.Listen, those freon tanks are not a good idea to use as an air storage tank. The number one reason is that they are designed to be used with refrigerant. The refrigerants, all of them, are designed to be used in a closed system which has been evacuated of atmosphere and the moisture that is in our atmosphere. The tanks are not internally protected from rusting and are not of substantial quality that would allow some oxidation without structural integrity loss. The tanks (most of them) are disposable. Which is why they are so readily available. Nobody ever sends the tanks back to be refilled because the factories don't even trust em. hahahaLong story short, leave well enough alone. I am sure 100 people will say they did it and were successful. Reply:i would go with joker on this ive had those tanks with two part foam in them and blown them up  they are pretty dang thin it may work at first but would probably fatigue fast and you could end up with the nickname stumpy 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:I was 18 and working at a tire shop and watched the guys lock the beads on A2 tires(the ones used on loaders) with starting fluid.  Looked pretty cool.  Fortunately I wasn't there long enough to perform the act on my own.  I've heard plenty of stories about 'widdow makers' flying apart from not being seated correctly before airing them up.  I've only personally seen a truck tire blow out though the retred after it had been sitting in the sun all day.  It was loud enough to get a few calls from neighboring businesses.  We had a bead locker that was constructed out of a propane tank that had been kicked around the shop for quite a few years.  It held up just fine.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

NEVER EVER EVER USE ETHER ON A SPLIT RIM WHEEL ASSEMBLY.  NEVER!!!!

Reply:buy one made to do the job , liabilety of someone getting hurt is not worth it.
Reply:i think i paid about 40 dollars for mine, dont know if you could make one much cheaper and still be safe.
Reply:The old style propane tanks are useless anyway since the retrofit valve is as much as a new tank. You shouldn't have a problem finding one.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:If I recall right from my days working with freon the tanks are not to be reused and I think its a federal law or DOT law that makes it illegal to transport tank after its empty.  They have a knock out plug that you are required to knock out on empty bottle so they cannot be used.
