I new at this board, I've always hung out on the old tractor forums at YTMag. I've been lurking here for just long enough to see that y'all seem to be a decent bunch. I haven't done any welding since I got my present job; last week I got my twenty year pin. On my previous, we had a welder but nobody knew how to use it. Being foreman, I assigned myself to figure it out. I had a lot of fun with it, but never really knew what I was doing. My hobby nowdays involves a couple of old tractors and a swamp, excuse enough for a welder. I just got a Lincoln AC  225 and will be starting to practice as soon as the wheels for my generator get here. Lotsa questions coming up. For starts, one of the first things on my list involves attaching 1/2" stainless rod to 1/4" mild steel plate. I've seen what to use to weld stainless to stainless and mild to mild, but never one to the other. Is that because you can't do it? Or that it just doesn't come up often? Thanks, Wm
Reply:For carbon steel to stainless, I'd recommend 309 stainless rod (AWS E309-15, AWS A5.4-69)
Reply:309 will get the job done.  You may want to do a bit of practicing on scrap before you make the critical weld you need thought.YT Mag, oh well, it was a nice place a few years back, till it went all PC.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
