im getting my machine up and running again to hopefully get on a pipeline somewhere,  Iit runs like a top but  my question is the about the good ol' saying "if it aint broke dont fix it" .  i have a leak or two on the front seals as well as the rear.  i have been running my machine quite a bit lately for a couple of hrs at a time and it doesnt really burn any oil as i check before i even turn it on.  it cranks right up after sitting for a week now i changed the spark plugs and cleaned the vacuum filter pan and put new oil in there.  the question i guess i have is should i tear it down and change seals or leave it until it gets really bad?  it really doesnt leak bad at all.  doesnt even leave a drop on ground when im welding in the shed.  also im still have an idle down problem it seems not to do it all the time.   it will idle down a little but not all the way.  it will sometimes but not always.  any help i greatly appreciated69 sa 200

Reply:Agreed - leave it.  Sounds more like typical weeping than a leak.As for the idler problem, what type does it have?  Electronic or vacuum?  In either case, check to make sure the throttle and idler linkage isn't binding somewhere. If vacuum, it's likely a dirty control valve, dirty/glogged time delay adjuster felt plug or misadjusted time delay.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:You'd probably have to let it leak for quite a while at that rate before fixing it would be cheaper than just putting some more oil in her. Plus, theres all the labor, and the risk of messing something else up. I vote leave it.
Reply:It a vacuum and I don't see anything binding as far as the throttle or linkage.  It's probably the control valve or time delay or felt plug.  Can someone please explain on how to fix it?   I'm mechanically inclined and probably can figure it out but some help would be nice and greatly appreciated.   I also had a friend of mine tell me that using a cigarette butt for a filter???  Has anyone heard of this?69 sa 200
Reply:What year model is it? If it's old then you should use non detergent oil. If it's newer then disregard.

Reply:The only reason I wanted to fix the leaks is cause I wanted to paint it. Thx duanne. Your always very helpful and informative69 sa 200
Reply:I understand the logic of leaving it alone but if you are trying to get pipeline work and you are going to use this as your primary welder then you may want to get it fixed.  The only reason I say this is that you sound concerned that it may go from weeping to full blown leaking and if it did then you would be down for sure and you can't make any $$$ if the welder is down. I'd be for getting it fixed prior to starting any pipeline job, plus it gives you the opportunity to paint it like you want to.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:Hey Diane a guy told me to just use a carb spring?  Have you heard of this?   Also quick question have you heard of wiring the idler to idle up when the grinder is used?   I read on aws that someone at sherrys remotes could help but cant seem to find any info on them69 sa 200
Reply:A carb spring or a carb needle (and seat)?  A carb needle makes sense as that's really what it is.The R-57 idler was designed to only operate with welding output and I have no doubt a method to activate it from the auxiliary output would be possible but no, I've not heard of such from Sherrys' Remotes.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Seems as I too have read where Mrs. Cable does something on the lines of a “Grind Ease”. Call her and ask. 318-281-1833Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
