My son is starting welding school tomorrow and I thought I'd get a new pair of gloves for him since our old ones are worn out. The ones we were using came from HF and really aren't any good. So I stopped by Airgas today and Jeez! They had gloves for everything from driving a truck, tig, mig and on and on. Looked like one pair of gloves per process. None for stick though. And none of them were the long cuff type. Lowe's has the long cuff kind called "task Force" and I'm leaning that way since he'll start with OA cutting and then go to stick. He'll be wearing a coat.I didn't know there were so many kinds of welding gloves, or driving gloves for that matter. What do you folks use or recommend? I guess we ain't been with it all this time.
Reply:For stick, we where given a pair of Crumpton welding gloves for school. It's like a super thick gardening glove that you can't feel crap in. We have a store called Tractor Supply Company around here who carries Hobart welding stuff and they have a nice pair of "Premium" Gloves that fit very well, last a long time, and you can feel better in them. They come in at $16 though versus 3 pairs for $9 HF specials.
Reply:The task force gloves are fine. They have a decent build, and are thick enough he will not be easily burned.1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together
Reply:The HF gloves we had seemed alright but the the lining came out pretty quick. They're all used up now.
Reply:Can't help with where but will say, IMHO, the ones sewn up with Kevlar thread are worth it. If there's a lefty at school( if sonny is a righty), make fast friends with them. Your non torch hand always wears 10 times as faster. They can buy the same gloves and swap the lefts for rights and visa versa.  Clear like mud??200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:The Radnor gloves at Airgas are made by Tillman and are pretty good gloves.  I buy the blue ones.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I bought a pair of the Hobart gloves for $16 at Tractor Supply and really like them.  All my welding and cutting is OA and I have found these thick enough to survive extreme silliness.  Can't tell you how many times I realize that the smoke is coming from my glove that grabbed hot steel and not from the welding   They are thick enough that you get some warning as the heat migrates through the material and can get your hand out before it is burned.I handle filler rods with them - a little tricky since they are so thick that I can't feel the rod, but that lets me burn filler down to a little nub before I toss it.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:Depending on what kind of welding he is doing, that determines the gloves.  If your using a mig gun, I liked to use a thick leather glove on my left hand, and a leather gardening glove on my right hand.  That way I better control over the gun and trigger.  Sometimes I would use one of those silver reflective heat shields on my left hand, along with the thick welding glove. For TIG, you may want sheepskin gloves so he can hold the feeder wire and have good control over the torch. For stick, anything from thick welding gloves to leather gardening gloves.  I never did like using those thick leather gloves unless I was doing some heavy welding, like with 3/16 rods.  Even then I would just wear those thick glove son my left hand, and then cover my right hand (leather garden glove) with my left hand.
Reply:get the whole package of OA gloves from HF.  I've never done stick welding, but I have used those gloves for OA, mig and tig (yeah, tig!)  While messing around with my mig welder, doing some vertical welds with the welder improperly set up, throwing sparks and molten metal everywhere, HF OA gloves are perfect for that.  I think $10 for 3 pairs.  All of them goes into the kitchen first as pot holder and oven mitts, then when they get ugly... off to the garage.
