Broken bolt removal

Had a friend call me yesterday and wanted to know if I could remove a couple or bolts that were broken off in his dozer, told him I'd be there first thing in the morning, Got him fixed and he was good to go.The welds aren't that pretty as that was not a requirement. The requirement was that they hold up to a 3/4" impact wrench till the bolts came out. Here are a few pictures, not real clear as all I had was my cell phone camera.Here goes, first picture is after 1 removed working on second one. Second picture is after they are removed laying on the plate they hold in place. Hard to tell by the picture, they are 3/4" fine thread.Last edited by David R; 11-02-2007 at 05:11 PM.

Reply:Thanks for the good words.Thanks David for fixing the pictures, I have to learn how to do them that way. For me puters are not nearly as easy to use as welders.

Reply:Do you stick a nut on the broken stud and weld through the opening? What prevents your weld puddle from sticking to the internal threads and binding the stud even more in there?

Reply:working in a machine shop I remove a lot of bolts pipe plugs and broken taps. Nice work. What did you use heli-arc? That is what I use and some 347 ss rod.
Reply:He welded a flat washer onto the bolt, then a nut onto the flat washer.  Works MUCH better than trying to weld inside a nut.
Reply:Aceman has it, exactly the way I did it. Used Stick and 7018 rod.
