I have an old Ford backhoe. I had to connect the hydraulic hose up for the bucket. But Ford used there own type of fittings. So I brazed the new to the old. It worked for a short time. And the braze blew out a pin hole crack. So now I'm thinking a weld might be better.  These are steel fittings designed to hold 2500 PSI. What would be the best weld material to use with a wire feed Mig? oxy/acet gas? Stick?  I don't have a Tig set up.Last edited by technoid; 10-15-2010 at 06:30 PM.Reason: spellingEmbrace theTea Party movement. Congress! Reply:What thread is the old fitting?I doubt Ford used their own thread sizes..Probably something that is still made today is available....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:If you would not have damaged the old fitting most times the hyd hose shop can attach a new line to the old fitting.  If you go to a HYD shop and they do not have the fitting - go to another shop or a Ford Tractor store.  If they cannot get you a line - call McGarvey Equipment - Renoldsville PA and they will get it for you or tell you what it is and tell you where to go to get it.  They have been in business almost as long as Henry Ford. Reply:Never had any issues with our old 555B or 8N on fittings. Any of the local hydraulics places could make up a hose or get us adapters when needed. We disconected the tilt cyl on the front bucket of the 555B and plumbed in QD's to angle the plow in the winter. Unjack the tilt, and plug in the plow. I usually use Parker Hydraulics for most stuff since they are not that far way, but I've used at least 6 or 7 differnt places when we've blown hoses/ lines on jobs not counting dealers like Bobcat, CAT, JD or Ford/New Holland. Even got hoses made at NAPA a few times..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:If your old hose is ok, just have it cut back at the fitting if you have room and have a new fitting installed or for that matter an entirely new hose.If you are blowing out hose then you may have to use a peice of steel line in some of the long runs, but I had alot of trouble this summer blowing out fittings because someone changed out a course quick connector on one of my hose and put a fine thread and it is hard to distinquish, so I got pissed off and ordered an entirely new hose and the dealer put the old adapter back on, thats when I discovered it was a thread issue. These days it is more expensive to keep buying oil that to fix a hose and even factoring the cost over a year for a leak it is worth it to get new hoses or fittings.Hose $25.00 Oil $85.00
Reply:I've used stick, hard wire and flux core even silver solder on the smaller fittings with no problems. Be aware tho that some configurations of hose ends are brazed or silver soldered origonally, some of the JIC fittings have the female seat attached to the actual tube that way. Only thing you should try and do is if the fitting is cad plated is to remove it. Hard to get a good looking weld not to mention it's hard on the lungs as well.....Mike

Reply:Silver braze will flow into some pretty small joints and is used in some pretty high pressure cascade type cooling systems, but I don't know if it would flow into threads and hold 2500psi working pressures.Maybe someone in HVAC will drop by with an opinion.Good LuckMatt
Reply:Harris used to have a nice little application chart. I haven't looked for it in ages. It was all about which filler, maximum gap for fill, minimum gap for flow, so-on."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:The strength of a brazed connection is  all about joint design. Many production high pressure hydraulic fittings are furnace brazed from two or more separate parts. Now about that odd-ball fitting... The description sounds like that of either SAE face seal or a unique Weatherhead fitting.I'll bet that an inexpensive  stock fitting to convert to either JIC or NPT is a catalog search away.Good Luck
