This is a log type manifold I made for my '84 diesel Ford Ranger to add a turbo.  I am not worried about the utmost in performance, so the Log style was the easiest way to go.  The main tube that makes up the log is a 2" OD x 1/8" wall DOM tube.  The little tiny primaries feeding into it are 1 3/4" x 1/8" wall DOM that I formed into a rectangle on the engine end with a die I made for a hydraulic press.  The flanges were 1/2" thick plate that I roughed out with the plasma then milled to final size with a roughing endmill.  I TIG welded it all up while bolted to an old manifold.  After it cooled I fly cut all the gasket surfaces on the Bridgeport vertical mill.I actually had it on the truck for the last 2 years, but had it off to work on the turbo this weekend.  While it was off I bead blasted it then spray painted it with 1500 degree paint.  (ignore the runs!)  Since the max EGT is about 1250 and the turbo's going to rarely see that I hope the paint holds up for a while.  We'll see. This turbo is boosting the stock 57hp hopefully into the 70's!  What a beast!
Reply:NICE work!  Glad that thing works for ya, seems to be very practical, as well as looking good! Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:A diesel ranger??Since when?  Never heard of one..But I guess anything is possible.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:1983 and 1984 Ford offered a Ranger with a Mazda built copy of a Perkins 2.2l forklift engine.  They are extremely durable with gear drive to the cam, but pitifully underpowered.  They came with 4 speeds, but I built a 5 speed for it from Mazda RX-7 internals since the housings were similar.  For '85 and '86 Ford offered the Ranger with a 2.3l Mitsubishi turbo diesel.  This engine uses a timing belt to drive the cam and is not as industrial as the Mazda, but made ab out 20 more horsepower.  All diesel rangers are pretty rare now...Mine is in great shape with under 100k on it, all southern salt free miles.  It's my daily driver since it get twice the mileage of my Powerstroke!  It's kinda like my Ministroke I guess - even had dual batteries from the factory.   Some of the guys I work with call it "Cricket" since it has a nice, quiet diesel rattle when idling.  I have also done a veggy conversion on it, but usually don't have time to collect and filter oil.Don't feel bad Zap - most guys behind the counter at auto parts stores will argue with me that no such thing exists until they see it as an option on thier screens.  The funniest thing was when I was filling it at the diesel pump at a truck stop and a guy driving a Powerstroke came running over yelling stop the pump!  He said was was screwing up big time!  I kept on pumping ad asked why he was so upset and he proceded to tell me I was at a diesel pump.  I replied that I hoped so since I was driving a diesel truck.  I ended up having to pop the hood so he could check it out...Last edited by TubularFab; 11-25-2007 at 07:51 PM.
