OK, Here is the issue, a relative knows I like to weld for fun and asks if I can make him a stand to hold an old steamer trunk. I figure ok, this should be pretty easy. When he sends me his design he wants the legs of the stand to be made out of these http://www.kingmetals.com/default.as...mcode=8-C50020 They are cast iron seahorses. I planned on building the frame out of 1" x 1" angle which is or course mild steel. I use a MM251, is there anyway (technique) or any wire out there that can bring these two "disimiliar" metals together? I know there are stick rods that can work on this, but what about for us MIG guys? If this doesn't work I may be looking at a re-design. If we do re-design is there any issue with welding the 1x1 to an item made out of cast steel, not cast iron? Thanks for any help you can give me.C.
Reply:They make something now-a-days called a nut and bolt. I know this is welding but if you can't weld it, bolt it. Drill it and bolt it on. Simple...easy.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:In my opinion for a non critical weld like that i think you would be fine with a little preheat and what ever filler your using in your mig for the angle. Either that or do you have a way that you can braze them on? Or maybe some 309 SS wire i think would work pretty good. --Gol'
Reply:like Gol' said... if it's not holding TOO much weight, it'll hold. i've sucessfully welded a piece of galvanized deck strapping (galv'd mild steel) to a cast-iron brake rotor from a Ford Excursion with my LE 100HD, loaded with 035 NR211MP. i then welded another brake rotor to the bottom of the first. i lifted the entire deal by the deck strap and it didn't break. it's not to say that it CAN'T be done... it just SHOULDN'T be done for structural issues. i think your main issue will be keeping the heat low enough to not discolor those sea horses and still get good penetration into it. i would weld a good leg (your 1x1 stock) onto the assembly, the right way... then lighly tack the action-figure onto the leg, just as deccoration. that way you still have the support ou need, but your reletive has the sea horse he wants.Later,Andy
