Just wondering if anyone has one or has made one and how good they work. Need to get some heat into my new shop next winter.  I'm buying a place in TN and will set up shop next winter.  I've seen the plans for a DIY set up and was wondering if it is worth it.  Also any idea how many btu's wood be good, the shop is 2400 sq. ft. with a 15' roof. Thanks,Dave
Reply:google btu calculator and enter the measurements, and how well insulated, if at all to get your btu requirements.  As for building a heater you may want to see if you would be insured in the event of a fire.Last edited by weldingman24; 12-15-2007 at 05:01 PM.
Reply:*standard safety disclaimer applies*Depending on your heat exchanger... ( boiler for heated floor, hot air, etc..etc..) a 'turk' burner seems to work alright..It's a vaporizing pot burner.  If you can find an old oil level regulator, like for a generator or stationary engine, give 'em enough fuel and air, they're hot and relatively clean

Reply:Search for " turk burner " on Google
Reply:Dave - As weldingman mentioned, you might want to check with your local zoning and/or your insurance company. I know short term, saving a few dollars on a self-built heater sounds great. However, something that doesn't have safety features - i.e., automatic overtemp shutoff, over fire protection, etc., or isn't UL listed, your insurance may not cover it in the event of a fire. Guess what - say I have $25,000 just in my building and another $20,000 in tools, you'll be out $45,000 in building and tools with not even a pot to pizz in. I've seen it happen. Spend a few hundred on something like this, that is safe and tested. You could get 2 of these, they are on sale right now! http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...029784_1029784OR one of these: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...7961_200307961John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Those "turk burner" pics look alot like the old military pot-bellied stoves which burned using a diesel (and eventually JP8) dripping mechanism.Having seen the fuel regulators fail several times (woke up in a tent full of black smoke because I was choking once myself) and the burned down tents when the "fire guard" fell asleep, I agree with Micro.  It's not worth the couple of bucks you'd save.

Reply:I am familiar with a homemade wood stove in a large shop that may interest you.  It is primarily a steel box fabricated from 3/16 or 1/4 plate approximately 36" x 48" and maybe 30" tall.  A 2 gal. reservoir has been constructed that is away from the stove.  All of the used oil from the diesel trucks and tractors is stockpiled and run through this reservoir.  It has a copper line running from the reservoir to the top of the stove with an inline valve to regulate the flow.  Once the wood is burning at optimum, the valve is manually opened to increase the btu's of the output.Presently, it is about 10 years old and shows no signs of burning through.  The heat output is signifigant.
