First of all, thanks to all here for the invaluable information in the past!We are finishing a SS vessel to a #4 surface finish and would like to limit the finished surface on each side of the welded seam to approx 2" or less.My Q is is there a type of tape that will mask off areas that a buffer will not permeate? Appreciate any comments, Robert P. QA Manager
Reply:I've seen guys clamp or vice grip a strip of thin gauge metal as a straight line for buffing seams. 20-24 ga SS would be easy to manipulate, reusable and fairly low cost in the long run.Never tried it but you may be able to use double sided tape to hold the guide on.
Reply:Several places make 2.0 mil stainless steel tape with a pressure sensitive adhesive on it. Just Google "stainless steel tape".Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Furnace/ductwork foil tape works, but if you don't go nuts with the buffer then plain masking tape works as well.
Reply:a #4 finish is pretty rough, I dont know what kind of buffer/wheels you plan on using but we use either really rough scotchbrite or 120 grit abrasives for a #4, Neither of which are going to care if you have tape down or not. I suggest looking at a thin strip of stainless or aluminum.Have we all gone mad? |
