I wanted a trailer for my atv so i could hual stuff with it like firewood and things. There like 300.00 new so i decided to make my own out of an old bed frame and other steel i got. it dosent have to be super strong but so far i think its turning out pretty good. heres some pics. ill try to update when i get more work done.
Reply:The axle setup. i had to machine them out to 5/8 to fit my wheels.Through the frame and all welded up
Reply:Here it is so far with the wheels on for the pic

Reply:Shane,Good way to use up what you have lying around.2 things from the last photo:1) May just be my eyes but the two crossmembers closest to the camera look to be in a different plane than the third crossmember. Do you have a twist or is something out of square?2) The wheel mounted on the left of the picture appears to be running in a different plane than the other wheel. Please check the angles of the flat bar that your axle stubs are welded to. It may be a good idea to locate some fairly deep 3-4" flatbar, or some more frame material and tie the two wheels together in line with your axle stubs so they run true and won't break off when you catch a rut or sideload the tires. All in all, good stuff. Keep posting pictures.Later,Jason
Reply:black wolf. everything is squared up good i think it looks that because of my camera not being good. the wheels were just threw on for the pic. but heres what i got now.
Reply:That looks a bit stronger. Good idea.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Looking at things now it could be just the fish eye effect of the camera. You're geting it done looks like. Going to have sides and and the whole bit. My wife likes to tow stuff around in one of those small sears dump trailers. You can hear her a mile away!!!
Reply:yea im using 3/4 plywood for the top and probably gonne make the sides with that too. soo far im happy with it. not bad for a 17 year old thats been welding for about 3 years!
Reply:Looks good Shane.Your triangulation works in compression which is stronger than extension. I don't think that you will apply sufficient sideloads to have much upwards deflection in the main horizontal tube.Your on the right track....Keep it up.Later,Jason
Reply:Looks good from here. Reply:yea i used to have a ryobi sawzall and it was terrible. this new milwaukee one is great. i got a milwaukee angle grinder too and love it.
Reply:Those metal angles are called gussets. Great job on the trailer - even better revision, much stronger! Uh oh, a nice new Milli-wak-eeeeee sawz-all! Wipe her down every night and she'll take care of you. Remember - let the machine do the work, don't ever force anything. Reply:What kind of rig are you using for your welding?
Reply:yea i coludnt think of the name. but yea gussets. im using a linclon weld pak with 0.35 lincoln innershield nr 211 mp wire.
Reply:Weld on the hitch shaft. it had to be bent so i used the cutoff wheel and sliced it about half through and bent it and then welded it up.
Reply:hitch shaft/bar welded to the frame
Reply:weld pics of it welded to the frame. i noticed i should of stopped and filled the crater in!!
Reply:im also going to put more gussets from the bar to the frame.
Reply:Nice beads, nice and flat. Right in the joint, even amount of weld metal on both pieces. Keep up the practice! City of L.A. Reply:Boy isn't dealing with that heavily pitted rusty stuff fun. Been there done that. Aside form grinding the crap out of it not much else you can do with it other than resort to 6011 stick rod. |
