Reply:repetition-repetition-repetition... very well done
Reply:Nice work! How did you keep the unit from warping? Was it bolted in place during the welding?

Reply:Well Zap I've got to say that I'm still impressed with that welding. Man am I ever going to try harder from now on to do mine better. I just can't imagine how any shop could send out work with such a talented TIG person with in there own shop. I would have to wonder about management's way of thinking seeing that happen. I tell you now lie, I have never seen any better welding in my life. Unbelievable and thanks for posting the pictures. Oh by the way. Your not bad with a camera either! Reply:Zapster you are getting so good at welding you should do it for a living
Reply:Very nice intake....looks like butta.  You have a steady hand.  Are the port tubes welded in with 2 or 3 passes?  That head is pretty impressive also.  Judging from the welds, they must have really tore that thing up.  You have to reeeeally try hard to break a head.  As for the tig machine, buy your own and sub the work yourself and charge the rates your boss pays the other guy...pretty soon you'll be the shop aluminum is sent to.  You could be a shop within a shop...wrapped in an enigma.  Just a thought.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:BE-yewtiful . somehow this reminds me of when they (gov.) shut down Mare Island . they had a lot of auctions , selling off lots of good stuff. The thing that kills me , I lusted after the big Miller 350 amp tig machines they sold off. i wasn't there for the auctions (stupid me) i heard that because the machines had labels on them " 440 volts " , everybody THOUGHT they were 3 phase. Some body bought 3 machines for $80 each ! they also work on 240 volts , single phase . the welders were in great working  order , they had been used for TIG , ONLY  !THEY were "syncrophase ", i think. BUT, $80  !!!!!!!!

Reply:I was just curious, because it looked like you were REALLY putting the filler to it...I guess I wasn't thinking about the port work afterwards.  I just figured it was for structural strength only.  I'll have to try stitching...never did that before.  It makes a pretty and interesting bead.  When I tig thicker stuff, I just do straight multi-pass...nothing fancy.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Neat as mateeee............top job have one of these  What the!!!
Reply:Dang! those are some mighty fine looking welds.I enjoy seeing the work of others.
Reply:You are one awesome welder!!!!! Those are really great looking welds. I wish mine were as straight and even as yours.
Reply:Some nice work there Zap-ster...I could take a few pointers from you!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:thanks for the kind words guys.. well it just goes to show ya what tigging 5 days a week 10 hrs a day for 4+ years can do for you...its like i stated before its all in the "seat time" you put in..(if i could'nt get it right after that much time i'd give up )...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Very nice work, gives me some inspiration to work harder at my aluminum skills for my own intake project ! Between passes on the intake runners do you let the material cool down to room temperature to prevent warpage? I assume you had the whole assebly bolted to the engine to pull heat out of the work intake manifold to help keep tolerances tight.Regards,Justin
Reply:the runners were pre fabbed because the angles had to be milled where they reach the plenum and the head flanges..other than that it was done in one operation...no cooling down allowed..once its up to temp it will weld easier...so no stopping when you start!!  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:and yes the heads were on a blown up block and the intake flanges tourqued to spec before welding.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:OK, I have been working my new job for 1 week.  I never Tig'ed aluminum until now.  And when I grow up, I want my welds to look like that.  I have two questions.1) You stick welded this?????2) You say you stitch welded this?  How do you stitch weld?
Reply:its tig welded...stick on alumimum? but stitch welding is just what the last pic shows..dont matter if its steel or aluminum...thats stitch welding.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I wish I could show pics of my welds at work.  But due to the work ( MRI Magnets) I am not aloud to take any.  But for only 1 week, they tell me at work they look good.  I was hired for SS work, but they ended up with only one guy to weld the Al. so they asked me to try it.

Reply:Zap: amazing welds my friend. Someday I hope to be able to lay down beads like that. I was getting really good with stainless after only 1 week with a brand new Lincoln Squarewave TIG 175 and then my luck changed and our shop was broken into and pretty much everything I had just bought was stolen!!They took all my high end tools, the Lincoln TIG, my Lincoln MIG (also new), my Hypertherm Plasma Cutter (1 month old) and worst of all was the 3 month old bendpak bender that that just set me back $7,000 with all the tooling to bend tubing from 1.5" - 3"That pretty much put my custom exhaust shop out of business. Someday I hope to be able to open again but not for about a year.I saved the pics from the first page. I am just waiting for the info I asked in the other thread and I will get them up in the gallery asaphttp://weldingfabricationtoolssupplies.blogspot.com/Josh L - [email protected] to Buy Welding & Fabrication Tools & Supplies (more than 40 vendors listed)World of Fabrication Blog (Projects, Instructional Videos, etc.)Welding & Fabrication Gallery

Reply:Hi, AWESOMW welding.  Not bad for your first week of welding ! JUST KIDDING, SUPER JOB !!!!! that stitch weld is like what I was showed thirty years ago with 5p 6010  stick rod  on carbon steel pipe and  I think they called it a TEXAS WEAVE. GREAT job.

Reply:OK, ok, highjacking a little but way curious now-Did someone just mill the flanges custom or does somewhere sell them?  FE flanges would be a nuisance to make! And a dual quad tunnel ram for an FE is awesome!!!  Maybe some day, for now my performer RPM
Reply:dam zap, nice work, now i have another reason to be motivated.

Reply:427 Ford, huh?  I've heard of them, but never actually seen one.  They must be scarce as hen's teeth?A memento from my younger years, stuck on my electrical panel box cover.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:If you've ever seen a 360..361..390..406..427..428..They are all the same except for the heads and innerds..Exact same blocks..Same outside head design..Most parts will swap with each other..And yes "FE" stuff (orig) is getting scarce.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ive got 2 standard bore low miles C7ME-A 390 short blocks I am hiding...  FE stuff is rare and expensive, unless ya know where to look...I get told I am confused being a 25 yr old FE guy though...Thats awesome you can make flanges like that and everything, where does someone go to learn that kinda machining skill?
