This will be Wednesdays work.  These are off a bobcat excavator.  The customer wants welded on shanks, they took the bolt on ones off and dropped 18 of these at my shop Monday.  I did two.  Here is the first one.  I put it into my daughters truck to send to my customer to make sure its what he wanted.  I don't like the way the teeth line up.  I had to leave the center one sticking out so It would come close to the edge ones.   I burned the paint off (preheat too) and ground where I could clean.  The paint on the shanks burns righ off with the oxy acet torch held on "cut" with a small tip.  Just wire brush and weld.I am going to grind the outside shanks or cutting edge so I can get them deeper into the bucket.  I don't like the gaps.I also turned the heat down from 300 ipm of .035 to 250.  Pulsed spray with 98/2.  The second bucket looks a LOT better, so I am glad this one didn't make it to the customer.  All welds are in one pass.   What ever angle the bucket was on, I  welded up.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:It isn't totally unusual to see the center teeth/tooth setting back further than the edge teeth. Depends on owner or operator preferrence, I guess. With chisel teeth these guys may be running in decent soil an want them even tho. Good work.
Reply:I want customer approval before I do 36 buckets.  I AINT doin em twice.   I think the shanks are a little big for the bucket, but.....The only job I can think of that I had a weld break was a John Deere 690 bucket.  I cut off the old shanks and welded on 5 new ones.  I had a wirematic 250 and weldmanpower G7.   I used the wirematic and migged them.  ONE shank broke off and after seeing the bucket, I had very little penetration.  I welded another one on for free with 7018......More pics tomorrow.  All welds are in ONE pass.  This pulsed spray is like spray painting with metal.I only have 400 lbs of 98/2 left in an 80 Cf tank.   I will be switching to 92/8 tomorrow.  It makes for a less forceful and broader arc with a flatter bead.  Keepiing the "wave control" way up (more hz, lower background current) makes it pretty easy to manipulate the puddle even in the big gaps. These buckets are the small ones.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Those teeth are a tad large. If the customer is a retailer, most contractors who know their equipment probably won't purchase them, knowing their digging performance will be affected by them. I would at least give them a heads up and if they still don't acknowledge it, too bad for them.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Yeah I thought they were large myself.   I don't have any idea how many shanks I have welded on, & triple that many teeth on worn out shanks.  I've used MIG on every one with E71T-1 using a 3 pass method. Lots of mine see very rocky terrain though.Personally I like the center tooth or teeth out a bit more than the corners. I've encountered customers that like em square across the bucket & center in. I guess it's preferance.

Reply:Those teeth look like they are for a 580 Case, not a mini excavator. With the pulsed spray, one pass should be fine on that bucket.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:98/2  Just kidding. Looks like a big job. I wish I lived near you to try the new pulse machine. Have fun and I hope it all works out for you.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Sure looks like it would be easy to snag one of them and tear the cutting edge loose or break it.
Reply:That'll keep ya busy.  I'd maybe try and weld the top and bottom side of the teeth in the flat, but that's just me.  If they're gappy, fill the gap with a pisser and burn a hotty overtop.  For what it is, and being welded on both sides, chances are it'll be enough.  Because it's welded all around and for what it is, it aint going anywhere!  The last job I had outside of where I work daily was welding a wear plate onto a plow for a neighbors quad.  He had the wear plate bolted on, and all I had do was stitch-weld it on and beef up the two mounting holes.  One was torn through, the other was maulled.  Regardless, it was the best 40 bucks I've made!  He wanted it welded on because he uses it to plow 60 km of sidewalk or something to that extent.  Havn't had any complaints yet!  Anyway, post more pictures!Last edited by mb_welder; 01-03-2008 at 07:11 AM.
Reply:yeh they look a bit large , ive seen em get popped off prying under things ,. personally i like all the edges to line up across the 3 , but thats only a personal preference , spray welded it should hold fine mate

Reply:More pics, Today I have ones that take 4 shanks.  The teeth they took off are a lot smaller than what I am putting on.  I had my daughter burn the paint off all the shanks.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Second half of the batch.  I have 18 of these to do.These are a little bigger and take 4 shanks. This is the gap I had to deal with.I put a noch in the cutting edge to make the teeth evenHere is how they lined up.  Much better on the bigger ones.I used a back and forth motion like 6010 to get the big bead and the whipped look.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
