Greetings all,I am in the process of building a tear drop / standie camper. I have my materials and am utilizing 11 gauge 2 inch tubing, with a little 1/8 angle for the drop floor. Finished camper will be around 1500#. I just thought it would be interesting to float a question to the group. I have two welders, a Hobart 140 with flux core, wire with CO2, and a Miller AC/DC Tbolt. Given these tools, what would you all use to build the trailer.
Reply:It all depends on your skills and experience, which I would consider more important. For myself, I would choose stick because that is what I use at work but being that its 11 ga ,flux core would work.
Reply:No offence...Given the way you worded the question, I'll assume you are new to welding or don't do it professionally. If you have to ask you probably shouldn't be doing a project like this. Trailers are not beginner projects, and are not projects for 110v migs. If you can't do code quality welds, everytime, in all positions, in whatever process you choose, with the machine you plan to do, you shouldn't be doing this sort of project.IF you are capable of doing the welds out of position, the stick machine will do the work easily. A 140 class mig will need to be maxed out to do 11ga and even then I'd bet your welds will be cold or lack pennetration if you don't know what you are doing..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:None Taken DSW. But I was hesitant to post this, as I expected to hear this response please dont take this as . While I have not built a camper before or welded much in recent years. As a Marine Engineer, I had numerous welding classes in college as well as structural engineering courses. My father (who I worked closely with) was a welder all his life and taught welding at the college level. Although I may not be a certified welder like many of you folks on this bbs, I feel know the difference between welding and pidgeon poo. I apologize for sounding defensive. I dont consider myself a neophyte. I just thought it would be interesting to hear different approaches.

Reply:My choice would be fluxcore wire. However, with only a small 110v mig, I would likely use stick for the main frame welds, spring mounts and ball coupler. The small mig will be fine for the upper camper body structure.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I probably shouldnt have even mentioned CO2, as my H140 even cranked to the max is inadequate for 11 gauge. I think 7014 looks great, but tends to be too high, 6013 lays low with decent penetration, 7018 probably a good balance but can get roasty with 1/8 inch rod. 3/32 rods are a little too shaky for me....these are just my quandaries
Reply:DesertRider... My tongue will be 3/16 tubing so I will hit that with 7018, probably bolt the coupler. 11 gauge and flux core are an OK combo. Unlike a lot of people who think their 110v is a 3/16 or 1/4 inch machine I feel they are 1/8 machines. I prefer to use my stick but its not a fast as the wire feeder...but the flux core is a lot messier..these were the thoughts I was looking to toss around. Sorry to be all over the place, but its 35 degrees here in Maine and Im just enjoying my saturday hangin out by the woodstove.
Reply:Fluxcore messier than stick? Nah, you just need to practice more with it. On the 7018/7014 thing, 7014 wets in and penetrates as well as 7018, in my experience. Practice with it some more.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
