I would like to pose a question on mig welding. When I learned to mig weld, I struggled with the heat and temp settings. A co-worker suggested that I take my product and tip it so that I could weld in a vertical manner, starting from the top and working my way down. It made things alot easier, and produced a nice looking weld with plently of penetration. Nothing high strength or structural, just general light duty 3/16" stuff. It got me up too speed alot faster in becoming proficent at mig welding. It made up for my lack of skill. Anyways, I have always felt that the heat penetration doesnt get directed into the most needed areas. I have never had any welds fail, but would like others thoughts in general on vertical mig welding.I ask this now, because I have a boss who insists on welding everything vertical with the mig. He makes very wide weld beads very fast and in one pass has no concern of welding 1/4" steel used to support heavy loads.Thoughts? Thanks, Doc.Some of the things I do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, or possibly deported. To put it another way, don't try this at home.Look at the stars whenever your can. That light travelled a long way to get here, dont let it go to waste on some patch of asphalt.
Reply:Vertical down gives much less penetration than vertical up. If it really has to count(structural, etc.) then you had better weld it up-hand. Learn to stick weld and you will see.
Reply:It sounds like youve been introduced to the wonderful production world.   Straight out of school, I was hired into a production invironment and couldn't understand why they practiced 'vertical downs' when the vertical up was so much superior. And when strength was an issue, 'triggering' uphil was the answer.  I asked why they triggered uphil and my supervisor told me it was a "D.O.T." (department of transportation) thing. He was clueless as I was, but on a different level.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:The preferred method is flat.  It often scares me that many of the managers in production businesses are ignorant of the processes that they manage.  Once again, the almighty $ rears it's ugly head!!Hank
Reply:That's a new one on me.  I always found welding on the flat far easier than any other position.  The only error you can make in providing too much heat and penetration is to blow a hole in it.  Whereas, welding vertical, you have to fight gravity and more carefully balance penetration with having the weld pool run away.  So for vertical down, it means moving faster and consequently getting less penetration.  For vertical up, you can move slower and get more penetration, as the weld pool sits on the previously solidified bead. What was wrong with your flat welds before you implemented his suggestion to weld vertical down?
