Turns out the welder I called on is AC.Any idea on the value of one of these (sorry I don't have the model #.Guy said it's about 20 years old.How big can I weld with this?  I don't plan on over 1/4" but, you never know.TIAdavid
Reply:Sounds like a toumbstone, in good condition, and if it hasn't been cooked it might be worth $100-.The machine will burn 5/32 rod all day, 40% duty cycle and not complain. If the tap switch is plastic the machine has aluminum windings.  If the switch is metal, the machine is older and has copper windings. Before you buy it, check with an AC voltmeter from the stinger to the case of the machine for voltage; When toumbstones are overworked they develope insulation problems and this test will show it.  There should be no voltage from machine case to leads.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I agree with the $ 100 value - I cleaned out the shop last summer and sold an old Lincoln 225 (copper windings) for $ 125. As I remember, it ran 1/8 6011 & 7018 most of the time. Open circuit voltage is only about 40 volts on these creatures so they are harder to learn on than a commercial machine with 80 volts open circuit.
